skyline engine conversion
skyline engine conversion
since the td42 are so dear to buy, im thinking of one year just biting the bullet and whacking a twin turbz skyline engine in my pootrol,
how hard??
like going from a full diesel setup to petty

although this has nothing to do with what your asking, it is something worth thinking about
go 1uzfe, you'll end up spending too much money on the RB26dett to get enough torque for it to turn your tires and push a 2000kg patrol along.
and if you think about it, the rb's don't really have a great rev range for 4x4ing.
the general consensus is either the 1uzfe toyota 4L v8, or the 4.5 nissan v8 if you wanna keep it all nissan.
you can pick up toyota crown half cuts for under $2,000
I plan on putting a 1uzfe into a single cab 4x4 hilux in the new year

i cant believe you people say this all the time....now dont get me wrong here as i am a diesel person myself
turbo petrols do have low down torque and more power than most diesels..
if not you can change aspects of the engine to do this.
an rb26-dett will have more than enough power/ torque in std form let alone a modded engine.. now as for rev bands, i do agree to a point, like i said you can get torque down low in the revs, but even if you cant then stick it in low...
people forget these days a heap of 4wding in mainly low range low to mid gear = your engine no matter what type is reving a heap higher than when in high range but your going slower... a std rb26-dett will piss over a std td42 dinosaur any day...
cheers mark

fitted a commodore v6 and auto to my patrol love it been in there for 3 yrs now done over 120000 kms on hwy get 12l/100km empty ,16l/100km fully loaded best part is the look on other commodore drivers you know thge ones who think yhey are quick when a pootrol keeps with them up to 150 kph then it gets scary [must get some new shocks] only draw back is when you have a car trailer with 2.5 tonne on bit to much for the auto keeps kicking in and out of overdriveat 100kph sit on 90 all good

You can get any engine to run in its power range with the right gearing , If you dig the RB26DETT go for it but remember you will need to change the diff gears to to get it to run in the power range of the engine. I can't believe the prejudice and lack of knowledge being used here. NO COMMENT IS BETTER THAN A STUPID ONE!!!
Save some cash and improve the engine you have (turbo etc) there are lots of hidden costs in transplants that you won't find out about until you are past the of no return.

Seen people with the RB30 setups and the decent setups do cost the money and they arent in the ideal rev-range. Put some weight in the truck and the power drops an incredible amount.
Heavy trucks werent designed to have a pissy 3.0 L motor in them with a massive or apparent correct turbo.
A well setup diesel, or V8 would be your best option. A high powered diesel will out perform/last more than your rb26 or rb30 any day of the week as there is more complicated shit in them to a diesel and know one can disagree to that.

Shit i wish i had read this b4 i built mine, i mean i can tow my mates 2.5 ton patrol on a 900kg trailer at 110km/h up hill on 35 inch tyres, and still be able to accelerate in 4th gear.......i didn't realize this was a bad thing and that my little motor is lacking in torque.
I should be ashamed of this ....yeah right, why do i get the impression the people in this thread who have bagged out the RB either:
A: have no idea what there talking about....
B: Don't own one so its not surprising they have no idea
C: Haven t had there ass kicked by a shitty RB on road or off yet

its funny, the rb has more torque in higher revs, triple the power and you are still saying they are shit. the torque produced by an rb26dett is around the same in standard form at 1200rpm as a turbo diesel. change the cams and it increases. new cams on an rb will set you back a grand installed and tuned (if you look around) and will obliterate a diesel.
ill be pushing a rocky with a 2.5 turbo at winch next year..... see how slow it is then

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
from the two people i know that both thave rb30 setups.Jimbo wrote:A high powered diesel will out perform/last more than your rb26 or rb30 any day of the week as there is more complicated shit in them to a diesel and know one can disagree to that
How do you come to this conclusion??????
Have had quite a few issues and they have spent alot of money on both them, yes they are fun but they have spent some money.
Mate did his, once he bought the computer a cheap rebuilt motor and a few other things still cost him $5000 with him doing most of the work and still then need to do diff gears so it adds.
Another person had his motor built but nizpro and that his motor was comp spec over 200rwkw constanly doing gearbox, clutches, (custom clutches are required).
I think the orginal question to this post was skyline motor change a feasible option cheaper option than a diesel.

your mate might want to do his conversion right next time if its an unreliable piece of shit, I have now done 3 of these conversions, my own gets the most abuse and i do mean abuse, so far there has not been a single issue. I run 10psi at 9.2 to 1 static comp on LPG and abuse it till the paint blisters in the engine bay and still no engine problems.
So maybe and this is just a suggestion, before you write the idea off either:
A: bag it out after you have been there done that yourself, and not based on info from your mums uncles brothers cousins shitbox which is problematic
B: can prove somehow that the many of us and 100's of high horsepower VL and skyline owners are all driving around in ticking time bombs....
I mean seriously how can people you bag out something they have no personal experience in. Doing gearboxes is possible in any car if you drive like a dumb ass, custom clutches are not needed at all, there is heaps of off the shelf gear available what a load of crap.

damn strait it can be cheaper than a diesel... you can pick a rb26- dett up for $3000 if you search... add cams,(not that you really need to) $1000 a decent clutch $800 to $1200... bang your done... well besides the wiring and fitting..
diesel conversion... 4.2... well reasonable start at $1000 (cheap) normally $2800 to $6000... add turbo kit ,reasonable $$1000 to $3500.. add fuel pump mods $400 to $1000... add clutch $550 to $1200..
i rest my case.. meh each to their own i guess but as for the original question yes a skyline engine will work and it will be just as (if not more) cost affective as a diesel/ diesel conversion.

The rb series motors are pretty hard to beat for reliability... I've seen VL's with more k's than my TD42, get flogged to an inch of there life for years on end without as much as an oil change.... That bottom end is SERIOUSLY strong.... they do crack heads, but so will any alloy head motor if not maintained...
I rekon u should do a twin cam, decompressed, supercharged rb30

Your mostly right, the head cracking issue is not on patrols and r31 skylines only on vl's due to excessively low radiator causing head to air pocket
