buy a hdj79x
or get hold of a 1hdft motor and box package
i am after the easist swap

Jason at Total Care 4wd (029838 9779) in Seven Hills in Sydney has apparently done a few of these and is the guy to speak to.jimbo jones wrote:will be keeping an eye on this thread I want to do the sametobie wrote:i am looking at putting a factory turbo motor (1hdft/1hdfte) into a 105x hzj

Re: turbo motor into a hzj105
Buy a 100 series coul be nice ( if you can afford that ) coz you get the engine ( and auto tranny ? ) and pretty nice compfort stuff from the 100 series .. to run in your 105 series ..tobie wrote:i am looking at putting a factory turbo motor (1hdft/1hdfte) into a 105x hzj

But .. you also have a tons of thinks that you never gonna use .. easy to sell ?
engine and box package sound to be the more reasonable deal . ..

Re: turbo motor into a hzj105
This was discussed a while ago, and the best and cheapester option was to do a SAS on a 100 series, as the 100 series motors and very dicky to get working easily with the ECU, and the amount of bits and pieces you need from the donor 100. 79/78 motor is a little less troublesome, but when you can get an SAS engineered for around $6k which was cheaper than figures being quoted.tobie wrote:i am looking at putting a factory turbo motor (1hdft/1hdfte) into a 105x hzj

Probably the best man to speak to is HDJ105 (Greg), he put an 1HDFT out of an 80 series into his 105, or speak to 80UTE (Wally).
Cheers,
Dan.

That would definately be the easiest option...an 80 front diff and away you go...ratios are sweet too. Purchase price is going to kill the budget...
Re: turbo motor into a hzj105
Problem with an 80 diff is different hubs.... 100 series diffs arent that expensive, both surfection and the big green meany had a pair with F&R airlockers for sale for ages at sub 3k, and they sat there for ages!dow50r wrote:+dj_hansen+ wrote:This was discussed a while ago, and the best and cheapester option was to do a SAS on a 100 series, as the 100 series motors and very dicky to get working easily with the ECU, and the amount of bits and pieces you need from the donor 100. 79/78 motor is a little less troublesome, but when you can get an SAS engineered for around $6k which was cheaper than figures being quoted.tobie wrote:i am looking at putting a factory turbo motor (1hdft/1hdfte) into a 105x hzj

The purchase price would kill you, agreed, but you still would end up on top i reckon after you include labour charges, esp when you start talking getting the motor from the wreckers - probably 6k, but you dont know much about its life, you can rebuild a front diff & fit an air locker for $1500, so you'd have a front diff fully rebuilt for less than the engine & g/box purchase price, and then the rest is really just fabrication.
If your doing the engine swap, you have to include not only the fabrication, but auto elec, air con, fuel tank issues etc etc. I cant say there has ever been an engine transplant that has come in under budget and been easier than first thought.
Cheers,
Dan.

I dont know why the engine swap would be that hard apart from the electrics. They are nearly the same engine with different internals.
I have heard several people say do a live axle conversion instead, but I have never seen or heard of one completed. I have heard of plenty of TD swaps.
My HZJ105 is a GXL with all the usual '98 fruit. An '07 Sahara or VX would be nicer, but it aint a poverty pack either.
