Zook rear bar pro's and con's

Currently rebuilding the zook and am wishing to remove and scrap the rear bar. I want to fabricate a new steel bar with an angled incline tapering toward the front of the car, aswell as some different tail lights. I priced a set of Narva sealed LED's (147 dollars each! & require atleast 4). Ive seen bars modified before, however they lose that "zook" look or feel about them and end up making the truck look completely different and altogether horrible!
Also possibly incorporate a spare wheel carrier? unsure yet. It is a LWB so i do have a touch more room in the cab for the spare.
Just thought i'd run the idea past yiou guys and see what ppl have done or what ideas are floating around out there. I really dont wish to use the shitty std tail lights as everytime im out in the mud/water the big girl ends up with atleast two blown globes. I know these are only cheap, however its another reason for the boys in blue to pick and prod, and therefore find other mods or damage that could be illegal.
Any ideas?

Here's a happy snap of my car running no rear bar at all - it doesn't look half bad i think :cool:

I've also been considering getting some round LED style lights, but at 147 each that's a tad more than i wanted to spend. :oops:

Not sure if you have been following the OTIS build up in 4wd monthly, but he (pat) has picked up some nice LED lights for the back of that car which look pretty good, but sadly the price of them was never listed i think :?

Let me know when you find the perfect ones and i will get some of them :D

Doesnt look half bad without the bar, im thinking even tigin' up a new one, once again the price of the lights is certainly an overkill, i saw a 78 series with a new tray running them, they look hot! especially when illuminated, ill keep ya posted Greg

Didn't take too long to knock mine up, it only pokes about half an inch further than the chassis rail.

Depending on What body I end up using might be off loading it soon though.

What about with the zook lights replaced for led's?

Been thinking about doing similar, but the cost and size (to big for the zook I believe) was the restrictive limit.

Going to do do the following for my chariot, 100x50x3 RHS, wrapped around body on the ends, cut 6 holes(3 each side) Diameter 90 with plasma or hole saw, or if desperate/skilled an oxy.

get some 3 1/2" exhaust tubing from 'Lilfords' (or your preffered exhaust shop ;) ). Cut 6 pieces 50mm long, weld these into each hole. seal up any gaps with 'sikaflex' (the version which you can paint over...not the regular silicon based stuff).

Go to Repco (insert your preffered car bit shop here...) and buy the appropriate round Hella 'trailer lights' which will fit perfectly in the hole, are water tight, can buy anywhere, and best of all cost only 5-10$ each.

Cheap, strong/robust, and easy.

I'm also looking at building a new rear bar for my high roof sierra. Was thinking about incorparting a wheel carrier as there is a split in the door skin inside and out at the bottom of the rear window. Each split is approx 20 mm long on either side of the spare wheel. Now the spare rattles along while I drive. Is this a common problem? The door does not look very robust inside. I think a carrier would help solve this problem along with a new door! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

yeah a carrier is the way to go. i carry my spare inside the tub now because of the stress a heavy tyre can place on the gate.

i'll eventually build a carrier but i reckon you should just grab bigsteve's rear bar with the carrier and call it good. save all the hard work and the price is killer. :cool:

We are making a tube rear bar and swing away carrier for a long wheel base zook at the moment I'll post some shots.

Sam, are you allowed to legally have the blinkers mounted on the swing out part ? If you could then you could almost just use the existing assembly from the old rear bar. BTW is that Gavin's zook ?

Yes that is Gavin's zook. Don't know about the lights though . This way they are in behind the tube and less likely to get broken.
