Boost with standard pump and no fuel controller - TD42

Post by Hof »

Hi,

Quick question, what are peoples opinions/experiences on the approximate maximum boost you can run on a 90 model GQ TD42 motor, with no pump modifications and no fuel controller (or whatever its called)

Cheers,

I'm not a Patrol owner .. but the boost can you run it's a relation of load over the engine ( means turbo ) and the capabilityes of the engine/turbo selected.

thinking in have the right turbo for your engine and you have no load and no more ( than stock ) amount of diesel maybe you don't gonna feel much diference in performace ( IMOP you feel the power over 10 PSI ) coz have much more air and no diesel to burn it .. ( stock pump settings )

in the same way right amount of diesel and air ( boost ) in your engine with no load means light boost coz your engine are not pushed ..

The max boost to set in your engine ( GQ ) it's a convination of 2 of above factors .. ( thinking again in the best turbo suited for your engine )

Maybe you want to know which it's the most amount of boost can yoyr Engine can handle .. ?

I'm a cruiser guy so in equivalent engine 1HZ ( vs GQ TD42 ) 14 PSI it's a safe nice number .. ( keeping under the glasses your EGT's )

It will depend on what turbo charger you are running, all have different levels of efficiency according to boost pressure or pressure ratio.

Ok a quick question that I have always wondered is, what happens if there is an excess of boost and not enough fuel.. From what I have read this runs cool but what effect does it have on the engine etc..

Too much air and not enough fuel..

Further to my last reply and after doing some more reading maybe I can make this more clear..

I understand that the stock pump can be wound up to deliver more fuel to a certain point before you need pump modifications.. From what I understand this dictates the maximum airflow required to suit the fuel delivered..

Now I dont want to modify the pump, only increase the fuel with the stock adjustment, so maybe what I need to know is what is the maximum stock fuel delivery amount.. Or if this is not known maybe someone knows the maximum (or normal) airflow that can be delivered to a wound up stock pump..

Stock gq td42 pumps are good enough for 85-90 ish rwkw. Excessive boost will allow egt to be cooler, but you have to watch that you dont overspeed the turbo by asking it to do too much.

I dont thing anyhting will happen to the engine from being like this, but why do it if its unnecessary, its not going to make any more power.

the amount of fuel you supply dictates the amount of boost your turbo will create (this also depends on the type / size of turbo ) so more fuel more boost

also if your motor is built after august 93 i wouldnt run too much boost , keep it around 11-12 psi max as the engine internals are not as strong and dont have piston cooling via oil squirters , unless it is a factory turbo motor

but seeing as it is a 90 model 14 to 15 psi should be safe

1/ get an egt guage if you want to up the fuel
2/ if she is blowing black smoke and / or the egt are above 550 it is getting too much fuel

i turned my pump up about 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn and that about as far as i can go as it is before egts go over 550 but every pump will be different

Boost can be overrated too, if the turbo oulet temps are high so will the EGT's be and the increase in power will be less, a small turbo spooling hard will produce higher outlet temps and therefore higher EGT's than a larger turbo but a larger turbo won't spool as efficiently at low rpm, so its a matter of having the set up to do what you want.

Thought it's a convination .. much fuel with no load = no boost ( or little one )

Much fuel with over sized turbine = no boost ( or to late ) and there are many conviations ..

so at your question .. thinking again in proper turbo ( ar compresor side and turbine ) more air ( don't think directly in boost ) alow your engine run cooler less EGT ( get a pyro and boost gauge for tunnning ) better ..

When I fitted the turbo onto my non turbo 2H I get max 5 PSI @ 3k rpm with no mods to the pump ..

In the tunning process ( that take about 1 month ) I turn 2.5 turns to my IP to get 14 PSI @ 2600 rpm that I want .. and no more than 1200 F EGT in this process also I want 10 PSI at 2k rpm ( max peak torque of my engine ) and playing with the numbers I get for my taste the better compromise between performance and reliabilty ( durability ) on my engine.
