I was looking on the ARB site and i was looking at the Tirfor T516 and the Magnum MHWU / MHWTH / MHWRR. i as just wondering of anyone knew what sort of price range i was looking at?

The Tirfor is listed in there current price list at $924.00. And the Magnum is $395.00.

i think most people use it once then realise why an electric winch is soooo good

thats why mine is in the back room , as soon as i had to use it once i went out and bought electric

Seriously though, i have used mine more for other things then what i have recovering vehicles, of which i can really only think of 2 occasions i've had to use it and not just get another vehicle to help with recovery. My ancient Tirfor isn't to hard to use. Unwinding and winding up the cable is the only nuisance.

Must agree with that it's a PITA winding the cable.

But as I have stated before the old Tirfor type winch will do things a 'lectric winch could never come close to.

That said I will be getting a 'Leccy for those times you don't need the sheer brute force and versatility of a Tirfor.

For the last year and a half my mates and I had a tirfor between us. His was a zook, mine was a SWB GQ.

It got us out of trouble so many times its impossible to remember them all.

The most memorable being one that an electric winch couldn't have helped. i managed to get the Mav on the edge of a 10 foot drop where the edge was on the inside of both the passenger side wheels.

Im confident that without the tirfor holding me from going over I wouldnt have gotten out of there without going on my roof.

Im saving for an electric winch now, my mate bought a GU with one already fitted but the tirfor is always in the back when we go out.

I bought an old Tirfor second-hand for $500 complete with shackles, shackle-blocks, gloves and extension strap, off the net.
A mate has picked up some unknown brand one for about $200.

Rabbit and I used mine to remove the 2 inch lift from his Zook. Made lifting and lowering the body pretty easy actually.
Other than that, it's only been used once for recovery, it pulled my zook along it's belly, when I dropped both sides into a huge set of ruts, and had nothing behind to pull from, so had no choice but to pull it forwards, dragging it several metres on it's diffs. Polished them up real nice though the original black would have been better.
I would carry it in most situations, even if I had a leccy one, simply for it's versatility, a leccy would be hard pressed righting a rolled vehicle it was attached to for example.
