widening steel wheels

Post by junior80 »

Hey

I have some 9x20 steel wheels that need to be widened out to 10x20.

does anyone know of any workshops preferably in sydney that do this sort of work? I know it can be done and I did do a search and nothing came up.

any help appreciated.

thanks
Tom

Mate , to widen your rims you will have to buy more rims and have them split on a lathe , then a single weld round the middle , this becomes pricy , what are you going to use them for that you need them widened 1 inch. Also top tyres would be able to help but I'm not sure if they do what your after , I've had many rims redished there but not widened . Glen dobbin builds rims , he might be able to help you , Cheers Paul.

only legal to have one weld around the rim, so you cant weld in a band like in the old days.

Need to do as laurie suggested, buy a second set of rims so you can get the extra 1" of width out of one of the rims, and bin the rest.

If its for road use there really is no other way, if its purely for offroad, you might be able to find some shady blokes willing to do it, but id suggest any of the reputable places would not put there name anywhere near anything dodgy.

if you have to buy a second set of rims, wouldn it be cheaper to just buy them in 10" rather than 9" ?

So you have 20" steel rims that you want to change from 9" wide to 10 " wide??

These are for a heavy transport application??

they may not be available in his stud pattern etc, but then, he could always put the correct centre in the new wheel.

Thanks guys, I have sorted it out, I found some 11X20 wheels that were an optional wheel size for my new toy. just have to get them from UK thats all.

It'll work out better this way cos I'll end up with two sets of wheels and tyres and the 11'' wheels will still look stock on the truck which I like.

I did call a few places and they all said what MART said, so If I'm going to the trouble of importing another set of 9'' wheels to turn mine into 10'' wheels, I may aswell import the right ones.

(only found the 11'' wheels late last night)

thanks for teh help guys.

no pics exist of it, and I won't get any for a few months,

the plan is to put 41'' V-treads on it, crawler gears, power steering, 16.5,000lb winch, shorten the chassis front and back, shorten and raise the tray, new fualtank, new ignition and carby rebuild, snorkle, rollbar, longer springs & shocks and new mounts, baja style seats, painjob etc.

I can't wait to get it out for the first time wheeling.

yeah, I can't find the bit of paper that tells me what the crawl ratio is but it's low.

I'll make a little thread on it when I start building it up.

Cool truck. When I lived in Germany I saw HEAPS of 404s sell for e300 or thereabouts (most needed a rebuild).

I still plan to bring one back myself one day...

yeah sorta, it's one of our mate's operations but patrol42 is doing alot of work to get it going. TractivForce would still be an idea without him.
