Buying an NG Pajero

Buying an NG Pajero
Hey lads,
Looking at purchasing an NG Pajero, it's a '90 model superwagon with only 154,000 on the clock and pretty good for its age. The reason for the low k's is apparently due to the guy not driving in the last two years except for every few months to make sure it's still going. And he's willing to take 5k for it.
Apart from a few dings and a slightly bent bullbar the exterior is really good same with the interior.
My questions though is how good are the old V6 motors i.e. fuel economy, life, maintainance stuff etc. How similar are they to the V6 in the NH models as dad used to own one before it got flooded?
The vehicle will be used for weekends away and will hopefully join a club down here aswell as hopefully taking it around the country.
Thanks,
GOONA

Ive got a NG pajero bought it in 95 it had 133000 on the clock, it now has 437000 on it apart from regular maintenance (brakes servicing etc) all I have changed is the idler arm , lower ball jionts & shockers rest of it is still original. We have no plans to sell it & are planning a trip to Cape York in 2009. The devil youi know is better than the one you dont.

Thanks for the reply,
Sounds like yours is going really well. Is yours the 3.0 petty? I'm kind of concerned about the fuel consumption but my guess is around the 15L/100k mark around town maybe a bit less on the highway...Does the jabber i looked at seem like a good buy and what should i look for when purchasing one of these?

Mine has the turbo diesel engine fitted great economy no speed, a friend of mine has V6 in his he hasn't had it that long but reckons about 14-15L/100k's is about right, A lot of it depends on how hard you drive it.
When you look at one to buy, look for low k's and a good clean overall package, dont be affraid to get under it and have a good look for damage or oil leaks, take a mate with you if you miss something he may pick it up, four eyes are better than two, if you pick a nice tidy unit with service history you should have no problems.

A bit off topic but, fuel economy, I have been tracking my useage on my NL paj with the 3.5 SOHC with a 5 speed in it. I have found I can get it down to about 16L/100km if I dont do any 4wd'ing thats too and from work everyday(about 30kms) in pretty heavy traffic. If I go away for the weekend 150kms on the highway + 100kms of 4wd it goes up to about 18L/100km. Mind you my engine has done 260,000 and isnt very healthy. I have now fitted bigger tyres so expect that the economy will go out the window.
Just thought I'd share.

Cheers fellas,
Does look like a clean vehicle, with low k's too. Not sure about the service history though, he did say he serviced it reguarly but hasn't been serviced for a while now now as its been sitting in the garage.
Dexter your fuel consumption does seem a little high and considering i want to do some long distance trips that kind of concerns me...maybe i should be looking at a diesel...
Thanks,
GOONA

My diesel use's around 11L/100k's it used to be better when engine was newer. Best figgers ever were 989k's from 1 tank of diesel, pajero at that stage had done around 250000k and ran 30inch tyres, it now runs 31's and this did not help with fuel economy but definetly better off road, everything is a compromise. One advantage of a petrol engine is you can always put it on gas to save some dollars.

Dexter is right the GEN1's are lighter so they should get better economy, my mate's one is duel fuel it works really well, we did a trip together a few months ago him on gas me on diesel, fuel cost worked out about the same but he was towing a lot bigger boat than I was. I dont think that there are to many other problems to look for. Mitsubishi had replaced the early gearbox that had a limited life span and there build quality at the time was really good. My own pajero has been excellent and if the one you are looking at has been looked after and serviced on time it should be ok.
