ARB air locker or DETROIT locker on a FJ65???

Hey lads, I've got a FJ 62 3F, single spinner wagon. My Question is what is best. Im buy no means a serious 4X4 hill junky, my cruiser is standard, except for sunraiser rims and new BFG mud terrains. I do quite a bit of shooting in the hills, and have found myself unable to get up slippery mud etc. Would a locker be better for front or rear? Let me know your thoughts. And Im a mechanic by trade, so I shouldnt have any dramas with fitting a kit myself, should I??

If it's slippery hills holding you back i'd go the rear locker. Not sure on prices, but if you can afford the ARB get that. My detroit can get annoying on the road.

I'd never put an auto-locker in the front, but others will disagree.

If your able to set up a diff properly you should have no problems installing either.

Yeah run ARB/TJM locker in the back and you should have no problem fitting them I'm only 3rd yr shit kicker and can do them properly, i've seen a chippy do it.

After years with auto lockers ( Lock Right, EZ Locker and Detroit ) I finally end with ARB ( close to 4 years running 'em now ) and I thought if you like drive your Cruiser ( FJ62 not 65 in toyota stuff ) on road .. or it's your DD a selectable locker it's your best bet.

Arb air locker on the rear sounds like the go. And yeah FJ 62 not 65. How much/ many mods have to be done to the diff housing? After 11 years as a mechanic, Ive become lazy, not rough or dogy, I just might get arb to install the kit, as I would do it and be very fussy as per usual and would take me ages, then I crack the shits.

one hole to drill/tap in the housing. you don't need to set up the whole diff if your pinion bearings are good, just buy yourself a new pair of carrier bearings and save yourself the potential hassle of pulling them off the factory carrier. Do it yourself and then you know it's done right, ARB lockers come with a very comprehensive kit (you will not need to buy anythign else except oil and sealant and/or a new gasket) and the instructions are very comprehensive too. even if you have never done one before, if you are half decent on the tools you will have it finished within 4 hours.

ARB normally wont change the pinion brgs unless you specifically ask them.
Learnt that the hard way. 'yep, replaced the brgs mate.....' NOT
