Thought everyone might want to see why I was having clutch problems at Cliffhanger. The frame on the adaptor housing holding the thrust bearing push rod has totally broken through in two places. I think this is why I have been having clutch problems since I built the car. Obviously the frame has been bending out of shape causing the thrust bearing to mis-align and then it eventually broke. Just another grand or so and three clutches later to spend on the car due to product failure which has no influence to breaking from a racing environment. Yeeha. Would be nice if suppliers fully tested their products before selling them.

clutch

Post by Hobzee »

Gees Todd, you still won even with no clutch. Just goes to show Todds determination... At the start box, even lined up in match racing with one said full noice Muppet, Todd would be sitting there with engine off. On "go" he would start the engine already in first gear and away he went up through the gears with no clutch ... and that started at about day 2.

Well Todd, next year we have lined up some more competition so you will need more than a working clutch to do it again ... And I'm sure you can.

Tonight Rudes announces the names registered and paid up. What a line up, 48 weeks before the event.

We have had meetings with Mike Smith re CCDA and we are agreed that with the support of the CCDA and it's event management plans, etc we will have what it takes to make '08 every bit as successful as '07.

Bring it on Doodle Boy !!!

Well done Rudi and Hobbzee. Obsolutely a great effort to obtain such a list of competitors from around Australia. Not only will this event offer great financial prices but will develope into one of THE GREAT 4 X 4 Races in Australia. The concept of all camping together (competitors, spectators, famlies and friends), being at the one location each night, no transport stage of any note, won't have to worry about RTA closing roads, allowing support teams, catered, facilities, CCDA approved, fantastic stages will ensure its success.

One question, my understanding was that there was to be no more than (30) thirty teams, the list seems to include a number in excess of that. Great if that is the case but it will require clockwork organisation and a third team of marshalls.

Keep Up the good work. Range Racing - Gary

Rumour has it that the Cliffhanger has now 50 competitors. Question for Rudi is this 50 rigs or 25 inclusive of driver and navigator? - Gary

Dont fall off ya chair Gary but I believe it is 50 trucks threfore

100 compeditors
30 Mashalls (at the very least)
200 Spectators (that's 2 per compeditor but lets hope they dont get that many)

330 people at the max  (my guess only not fact YET)

going on the past three years and what we have been provideing re food,
showers, toilets etc
we will need

10,000 litres of water
7 showers
14 Toilets

meal times have been an hour now there will most likley be two staggered times to get everyone fed

Four groups of trucks each with a spectator group of @50 people in 20 vehicles.

This is of course ALL SPECULATION as I have no idea how the head two (Hobzee & Rudi) have sorted it in their heads.

(Hopefully) One of your Specy organizers

With 50 trucks i'm presuming we will have to be split into groups to run stages?????
Any ideas what the format will be yet Rudes or Hobzee???

50

Post by Hobzee »

Yes Mr Ruffy, grouping has been arranged.

Will be too hard to get 50 rigs through some stages in 1 day and say 50 rigs down a river run together - can you imagine the traffic at the waypoints? So splitting up is the only way to go.

Monday and Tuesday there will be 4 groups and you guys have a 2-Day cycle (so bring the bike ... ) through major stages along with minor stages and night stuff. Tuesday night cummulative results will be announced and used to re-group you for another 2-Day cycle Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday night cummulative results will mean re-group again for a Friday round robin of stages for a 1-Day cycle.

We will even plan it so that when you get back to camp, groups are staggered so Kev can handle progressive traffic through the Koota Kitchen and not have everyone arrive back at camp at once. There will be allocated feeding times at the zoo for a given group and its corresponding spectator group so that Dad can eat with the kids, etc.

Stage times and penalties will be available daily but final scores not available until everone has done the stages (Tue and Thur nights). We are going to introduce "video umpire" at the start gates to allow or disallow appeals against jumping starts.

Naturally we will arrange more toilets and water, etc, etc. That goes without saying!

Preferential spectator bookings will be granted to all competitors families, friends, sponsors and supporters.

We are about 30% there with sponsors already.

1st newsletter will be out soon and this type of detail will be in it along with comprehensive up to date lists of competitors and sponsor recognition, etc. Going public on a forum seems to invite criticism but in this case we need to demonstrate to some folk that we have in deed given this puppy a great deal of thought and planning already.

Thanks for the support everyone and to the volunteers calling to offer marshaling and general assistance... keep it coming.. ;)

... just kidding about the bike ...

I knew it would be, it was more the format i was curious on.. Too many rumours going round!
Hobzee wrote: Going public on a forum seems to invite criticism
Yes indeed it does seem to be that way. It's a shame that now you guys have taken the 'Big Step' to produce a national event with all the right ingredients in a professional manner that you get so much negativity and critiscism before the event has even taken place. We (as competitors) NEED an event just like this and should be throwing our support behind it.

I was going to suggest that maybe Todd brings a bike... They don't have Clutches

Believe the Cliffhanger is already a national event, whether we need to head down the road for the need to attract international teams is debateable. The organisers of the Cliffhanger need to trend carefully or the event will up a "status" event where only those competitors with the capacity to invest vast sums of money will be able to compete. I have seen the Cliffhanger encompass all that other top notch events provide in terms of stages but at an investment within the reach of the majority and not the minority.

The end result of events such as the Australia Safari and others where we won't utter there names cater for those who can afford the ever increasing entry fee. It is understood without question that the organisers need to cover their costs with some extra but not at the expense of competitors who wish to compete in a sport that is expensive for them to build their rigs but want to have some enjoyment and fun. We are not Formula One and unless we are careful the end result will be events that are expensive and only for the special few. Gary

Post by Hobzee »

We agree with Garry's sentiments about affordability..

A practical businessman would say we are too cheap if we get so many people so fast. But we do not intend to increase entry fees. Affordability is one of the Cliffhanger's seven secret ingredients. Not forgetting it is a business with risks, it is also a hobby and a passion for us.

In '09 (year after next) we will introduce a methodolgy for accepting entries based on a loyalty program for those who have done previous Cliffhangers or Navrun events, etc and due regard will also be given to those remaining on "stand-by" and miss out in '08. An entry release/launch date will be publicised well in advance.

But that is a year away ..
