Water/Air Intercooler on TD42

Post by Andrew_C »

I have mostly finished and thought I would share my project for last week while I have been on holidays. It's been spoken about a lot but the only other one I have seen with somebody biting the bullet and putting a factory Water/Air I/C on anything is the Isuzu powered defender on here with the Celica I/C.

Basically it is a modified Subaru Liberty RS turbo water/air intercooler (Intake side cut, turned around and Tigged back on in a more practical position), radiator, water pump etc. on a NA GU TD42 with GT25, high mount manifold, Dump pipe and 3 inch exhaust.

I havn't had a chance to get it dynoed yet but certainly hasn't decreased in power or torque since I fitted it and EGTs are down. Physically a temperature difference can be felt between the intake side and outlet side and the radiator does get warm so heat is being transfered away. Lost about 1lb on the guage at full boost.

Once it is dynoed, hopefully more rock solid results will be available. Still need to fix a couple of hose clamps that I got that were too small, paint the pipes, install a fan on the radiator but otherwise seems pretty good.

Good work mate ;)

I'm looking @ doing a water-air I/C on my GU & it's always good to see what else is getting around.

Let us know how you go on the dyno.

Joe

Yup on dyno- it was something like 85kw on the Deiseltec dyno, its still running a standard, but tuned as much as possible pump which since we have a new baby, will probably be staying like that for a while :)

1psi drop is about perfect. What size rad are you using to cool the water?

Not familiar with these, is this plumbed into the vehicle's radiator, or have it's own radiator?

Own rad and an electric pump if it's an independant system.

the only proper way to do it is to have its own independant radiator with pump, there is no use using exisitin radiator as your warer is already well over 60degrees at normal operating temp, you dont want to heat your inlet air,

your aiming to lower inlet temps as low as possible, so you need independant rad and pump,

most importers ell them for around $600 complete 2nd hand kit from a rexy. i am putting one on my sierra later this year a lot of rexy guys throw them to run front mounts shame they work realy well especialy in 4bs as we dont have the speed to cool a front mount cooler

All up so far -
$350 for IC, Radiator, Water pump at Suby Wreckers
$80 for pipe mods at local Aluminium Tig bloke
$35 for 2.5inch pipe donut at Truck Bits
$35 for 2.5 to 3 inch silicon adaptor at Pirtek
$21 for 3 metres of heater hose
$50+ for Relays, hose clamps, wiring, steel for brackets etc.
so probably around $600 as it sits at the moment

see if your local tig guy will modifed your intake manifold so it flows better and more direct. ie. cut the top out of it and weld some 65x65 rhs on it until its high enough to join to the i/c with a silcone joiner. you should get a more even burn (even temp) in all the cylinders.
cheers Pete.

Do you need a body lift to fit these in? I was looking at fitting the same unit to my gq turbo petrol

I've got a PWR 6x10 and that alone is a lot more the $600 but then mine is a turboed V8 petrol so a bit different. The other advantage with water to air is much short intake length when compared to a front mount.

The WAIC(water to air intercoolers) are found on both the gen 1 liberty rs and JDM legacy RS/GT's

they sell for between $100 - $300 for the complete kit from a subaru.

they are nothing like a WRX topmount as a wrx topmount is air to air.

there is one selling on ebay at the moment, i think it is $150 buy it now,

anyone chasing one of these intercoolers, they are usually foresale second hand over at www.rslibertyclub.org

i have 2 of the heat echangers sitting in my guarage unused as i went to a FMIC on my liberty, i have been toying with the idea of fitting it to my mates GQ.
