max speed out of low range?
max speed out of low range?
i have no idea what diffs are in my zook but i know i got a 1L xfer case and a 5speed box.
i can hardly tell the difference between high and low in it,
this arvo i put it in low and managed to get up to 100k easily enough.
could it be possible that its not selecting low range correctly? or is the low ratio not much different from the high? i thought it was spose to be around 3:1 or something

Dont think Jtop has Gears Paul
I know mine would throw a leg out of bed if i tried for more than 40Km/h in 5th low.

gears are definatley going to be put in, im just wondering why i can go so fast in low range.
even the patrol (2.02:1) when standard could only get about 60-70 flat out
so my understanding was that if the 1L case is around 3:1 it should be around the 40k mark tops.

Mines 1.3L all round, but very similar setup. I find that low range is approximatly a gear difference. What I mean is that 1st in HR is approx 2nd in low, 2nd high ~ 3rd low etc. When you calculate the numbers this isn't the case as all the gears are spaced differently, but its still an adequate crude guide. If my little theory holds then 5th Low is approx 4th high; and 4th high gets 100km/h quite often, can even get 100km/h out of 3rd high though it screams too much for my liking.
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
That's because a patrol has a 2:1 reduction in low and a sierra doesn't because it has an indirect high range. To get your "real" low range, you have to divide low by high -j-top paj wrote:gears are definatley going to be put in, im just wondering why i can go so fast in low range.

1.0 sierra: 2.558/1.59= 1.60:1 "real" low range
1.3 sierra: 2.268/1.409= 1.61:1 "real low range"
6:1 transfer gears:
6.4:1/1.67= 3.83 "real" low range.

Oh, and I forgot to add, that yes, I'm sure that makes it possible to do 100km/h in low range, but it doesn't make it a good idea.
100km/h in low would equal 160km/h in high, which is pretty fast to be spinning the gearbox, jackshaft and 1/2 the transfer case.
As a rule of thumb, I don't generally exceed peak torque in 4th gear low range. IMHO beyond that point, shift into high.
with deep reduction gears, this can be a bit of a hassle as there is a big gap between low and high, but its livable.

Send the excel file to me mate i got a site i can host it on for you will post it up here, send it to me @ matthewp92@hotmail.comzookimal wrote:If anyone wants to host it I have an excel sheet I put together with a map of speeds in gear and rpm at a given speed etc. It might help for this problem. See screenshot. Obviously the user needs to input their own ratios and tyre size.
After reading so many threads recently about gearing I'm supprised this website has been posted yet or even more so been placed in the bible
