Managed to get home on a 31 for a spare...

Post by JK »

Just returned from a fantastic week up the coast. The GQ went like a dream and am really looking forward to doing more touring. Only thing that would make it easier for the long distances is a turbo but as it is the 33s and the standard 4.1s are perfect for 100 - 110 cruising.

On the way back home, we stopped in to Myall Lakes to have a stickybeak and I managed to get a rock straight in thru the tread resulting in a not so slow leak that let us get to the Karuah servo. Of course it had to happen at 5pm on a Sunday. Then it start raining :?

As I couldn't get it fixed, I threw the 31 that I keep for a spare on the front next to the 33x12.5 BFG. Damn it looked bootie but I was mighty surprised with how well it drove at all speeds and even over rough roads.

The final 150ks home was no dramas.

The damaged tyre is now AOK now thanks to Fourwheelin' for the patch.

I'll definitely be investing in a tubeless repair kit when I have the $$$.

Here is what a 5" lifted + 2" body lift GQ looks like with a 31 up front...

I reckon it will be the new fashion - understatement. Built rigs with puny tyres, it screams I don't need to prove how tough it is on the road...it's when its offroad that counts...

Oh and big smack for having a mismatched spare.

Yeah... I should have kept the old 31s for road duty. Awesome gearing he he

As for the spare... yes I deserve a good spanking but I am currently looking for an old (and extremely cheap) 33 to replace the 31 spare. The GQ only serves as a shopping trolley thru the week so the 31 has been OK for now.
