Is a snorkel going to improve my fuel consumption?

my mate fittedtwin snorkles to his patrol with a 5L dunnydore V8, on the highway, the ECU (aftermarket) was reading 1 psi boost, so yes snorkles do have a supercharge effect, but would 1 psi really make a difference????

I'd say his sensor was out. To get 1psi of ram air you need to be doing 380 km/h and sucking nothing down the snorkle.

when i put a snorkle on my lux (2.8 diesel) i notice where i went up hills in 3rd i then was going up in 4th, now i have a 80 i put a snorkle on and it also is better then before without. well worth the $$$$ i think

I don't think soo .. at least in diesel engines ..

Yeah, I've found it valuable in keeping the intake out of the water when crossing rivers, but a side-benefit I've found is that I go through a lot less air filters. Prior to adding the snorkel, I'd go through 8 or 9 air filters a year, but in the two years since I've added the snorkel I've only changed air filters twice.

Cool ram air is better for making power than hot air fed from under your bonnet or inner guard, add a bigger exhaust and a more efficient engine you will have. Fuel economy will now be controlled by your right foot.

If a cold air intake is your goal. There are ways to acheive it without adding 2m of pipe to your intake.

For many people an inlet full of muddy water is never going to be a problem.

For those with that risk, the best choice is pretty clear.

well its a bit like this have you ever taken a look at where your current intake is ? .
by putting a snorkel on not only do you get cleaner air , more air , and cooler air but you generaly have the chance of getting more power especialy when loading the engine up a hill , and to further that you just may get better fuel econemy.

If you get into water that deep on Fraser you won't need a snorkel, You'll need a crane and a backhoe.

Reminds me of a few years ago when a friend's folks took a short detour off the 'main' track out to fraser island to let a fourby coming the other way past, and ended up in the soft stuff.. Tow truck was called, and he promptly got stuck too.. By the time a 4wd towtruck had got the original to truck out, it was too late for their prado..

It 'ran' after the tide went down, but basically sat there revving from idle to redline over and over - seems the ecu didn't like being underwater overnight :-p

As for snorkels adding power, the Safari site on snorkels reckons they give ~10% air pressure boost at 100k/h? I guess that'd be good for something..

The biggest pressure increase you can get at 100km/h is 0.4%

i guess if it makes people happy and satisfied that they have gained power (whether its true or in their head) then its money well spent.

and power on paper is never the same as in real life, there are always variables. I have seen times where cars have made less power on the dyno, but been quicker down the quarter mile and better on the road due to the way their power curve has changed.

Nah, I just like to show the reality behind some ludicrous claims.
I quite like the look of most snorkels and would definitely use one if I drove through rivers often.

Instead I have a cold air intake at the front lip of my bonnet which I can disconnect if the going gets dodgy.
