i am thinking of putting 33's or 35's on my 87 hilux, how much spring and body lift will it need,and most important, how expensive is the job.

Very little it measured 22.75" to the bottom of the chassie at ride height on 38" TSLs. But the front axle was also forward around 4" and the firewall had allso been tubbed and guards had 2" extra radius cut into them. But i still disagrea that by just lifting a hilux 4" your going to "CLEAR" 39s.
HILUX CLEARANCE
The original silver bullet body{early 4speed shape} ran 36swampers with very little scrubage, that was with 3"body 2"spring and snakes shackles and wheelspacers. Thats round7". Ran 35s easy without spacers.
When we changed to the ln65 body {87model} we needed to go a further 2" to run the 36s.
U must hav cut heaps of your guards to clear 39s.
Answer to original question, I would go 3"body and extended shackles. If your springs arent to flat leave em and get new shocks or move current ones.

fair enough, didnt realise that but now i look they definately do have a larger arch in them. never thought the car was that high compared to most luxes. but ive found a pic and it looks huge on 31s.RUFF wrote:I had Jeep springs and stock length shackel.

is it right that if i increase the wheel size from 29.5" to 33, it needs engineering? also if i do no bodylifting, how much spring lift is needed?
The steering box is chassis mounted and the collum is body mounted there will be a increase of lenght when the cabs lifted so it's wise to at least lossen the long splined bit under dash off lift the cab then do it back up or get one of those small spaces for it. mine was done before i bought my ute and it wasn't done like this and pulled the tilt knuckle out inside the collum lucky it was out the bush but the bit at 8:30 on a wednesday night wasn't so good. Guard chop looks sweet.

You "should" get away with running 33s with just 2" springs but the problem is that there are so many different brand 2" springs and they all sit at different heights.
Mine clears 33's with 2" bodylift and 2" spring lift with very limited uptravel . To have it travelling as it should be would still require guard mods(only to the outer panel though).
How much do you care about the panels? Why not hit it with the jigsaw first and keep it low to start with?, I wouldn't want mine any higher than it currently is on std width lux diffs but that is a personal preference.

i have been told to use the rear leaf springs off a hilux on the front, and extended shackles etc etc, anybody ever tried any other springs? also been told to put the rear springs off a 98/99 hilux in my 87 model for more lift, any comment??????
98/99 are ifs arent they? rears up front is just a way of getting longer leaves that also put the diff forward a few mills to help clear bigger tyres. by putting the longer leaf packs in it enables the springs to bow further and thus giving more lift.
its quite complicated but the reason behind ruf being so popular is because it is simple. just extended shackles and crossover steering (dont know is standard steering works with the diff forward) where as putting in even longer leaves needs extra work.

Yeah with moving the diff foward with either Ruf or drilling perches it'll need to have shorter draglink and torque rod (can leave off but not the best to) These need to be shortend however far you move the diff this is where Xover or hi steer is good as it doesn't hit on u bolts. Can also do U-bolt flip on the front. with moving it foward also the tailshaft needs to be lenghtend as it'll fall out
