Changing CV's

Post by AFeral »

I've got to change the CV's on my patrol GQ. I've had look at the manual and it all looks pretty strait foward. One question there's a large nut and lock nut holding the hub on what size socket will I need to undo this. As I have the tools to do the rest of the job.
Any hints and tips too make the job easyer.
Thanks for your time

i think they are 53mm. the nuts arent usually super tight. i normally just use a hammer and screw driver to get them off

The MQ uses a 52mm nut and I am 99% certain the GQ system is identical. For certain the threads are the same. I use a standard 1/2" 52mm socket and it fits just right. You need a good fit as the outer (NOT the inner) locknut needs to be torqued to 123-145 ft-lbs (167-196 N-m) according to the Nissan Service manual for the MQ so you don't want the tool to slip.

The problem with both the GQ and MQ is that when tightening the outer locknut it tends to shear the tab on the locking washer which engages with the keyway in the stub axle. So even if you have a new lockwasher bent correctly over both the inner and outer nuts the nuts can work loose. If you persist in using the lockwasher system have several new washers handy and mark the position of the washer so that you can see if it moves (inner tab stripped) as you tighten the outer. If this happens you have probably overtightened the inner nut too clamping the bearing solid!

A more secure and easier to fit system is that on the GU. This can be retrofitted to both the GQ and MQ. See the pictures and Part Nos I posted on

and also the discussion on

I haven't fitted this system yet but it would save you a lot of hassle and probably be around the same price (at around $45 for two sets) as buying a 52mm socket.

Cheers

I just drilled a hole in the nuts and used a punch and a hammer to undo em. I replaced them with the gu set up.
