different diff centres?
if i have an 86 model hilux with 4.8 diff ratio in the front and 4.5 diff ratio in the back, does my hilux go into 4 wheel drive or not. ? If i get a 4.8 diff centre installed in the back will it go into 4wd then?.
Gettin in to low or high range has nothin to do with the diff. it will go change "ranges" fine. however with different ratio's like that ya rear will be faster than ya front and will bind up the t-case and shatter it. change a center.

If it's stuck between 2wd and 4wd the selector may have jumped out of it's Grove just take boot off and undo the 4 12mm bolts lift it up and repostion it in the right place (you'll figure out where that is ok) mine does this if you don't shift it spot on and then force it. I should fix it best way to do this would be get another from wreckers or mig it up a bit than grind back till it fit's snug but doesn't bind.
And get them diff's sorted before you drive it in 4wd

plenty of parts on the bench
while you are at the wreckers find out what difs they have
heaps of,& put 2 of them in,4.88s are getting harder to
find,& the rarer they are the more expen$ive they become.
possibly the old owner of your rig had big wheels,& put 4.88$
in to compen$ate speed lost,but broke the rear,thus a 4.5
pull your trany lever out, stick a screw driver down & move
the selectors around, till the gaps line up,put lever back,
change frnt diff, &go wheelin,p.s is it ahigh pinion front,
& how much $$$$
