Unichips

Post by Zac Zec »

Whats the go with unichips? Do they work? Iwant to chip my computer on my patrol. Its a pretty standard motor. I'm just after another 10% power increase or so. Anyone Have any ideas without force induction or a conversion?
Cheers

IMHO I think it depends on what you have done already...

I'd get extractors, better air intake, modified cam if required before getting a unichip. That way the chip can be programed to take full advantage of the power mods already in place. If you just whacked a chip in your still restricted by things like airflow etc..

I have Extractors and exhuast already but I own a Range Rover and apparently the replacement chips arnt very good for them. I was told the Haultech ECU (complete wiring kit) was the way to go for an RR.

I am just trying to get soem feed back for a couple of mates the are considering it, I was also givin the topic a BUMP

Form what I know about getting a chip is that it is not worth it unless you are going to get exhaust, extractors, cam, ait intake and then filanlly get the chip as they will program it for the mods.

Basically all they are doing is changing the timing slightly and changing the air fuel mixture. by not having the mods and using a chip on a standard motor all you will be doing is using more fuel with little to no extra power.

I would get the other mods first.

Just my opinion and experience.

A guy at work has just a BA Falcon XR8- big deal you say?!

Well this has had the full Herrod Motorsport treatment www.herrodmotorsport.com and is putting out 290kW @ the rear wheels. It's running a Unichip.

I was told from a good source that just by fitting and tuning a motec computer on the new 260Kw boss XR8, power jumps up 2 a massive 340Kw with no other mods

Ummm common mistake but Sam has nothing to do with Haltech EFI systems.

HAULTECH ENGINEERING builds Airconditioning Systems for Sleeper cabs on trucks and we also do some 4wd modifications when we have time.

I can sell you a Motec (I have a few second hand ones here too), but it would be a waste of money if you only have a bigger exhaust etc.

It might be worth buying a Motec if you are planning on upgrading your motor in the future - ie cams, head work or a turbo. A chip will be easier and cheaper. It shouldn't be too hard to get a 10 percent improvement - the factory tuning on the TB42E is pretty conservative. If you go too aggressive on on the ignition curve, it might be wise to wire up a air flow converter or similar so you can stop the pinging when you get a load of bad fuel...

I have seen some pretty good results with Unichips on the 3.0L turbo diesel Patrols with minor mods...
