SA Desert trip

Post by FEAROZA »

Just got back from a trip from Sale to Horshamto Mildura to Pinnaroo down the SA border and back through Horsham with some serious sand dune driving through the little and big deserts. it was mad. best fun i've had in ages actually - went with a four big-rig convoy. A few things I noticed about the feroza are as follows:

-The 1.6 sounds WILD at 6500 rpm.
-The 1.6 is not suitable for climbing big dunes - prob an issue with most manual petrol engines though
-The 1.6 is VERY frugal with fuel below 80kph - even in 4wd and in sand. I was AMAZED at the economy I got out of it.
-The Feroza is a great size machine for one-up or maybe two-up camping and touring. Depends on how many slabs you want to take.
-The on road performance with 38psi in 235/75/R15's was good and better than expected. However it had a fair thirst at over 100kph.
-I would really like a turbo diesel if I ever tackled serious sand again.
-I was dissapointned a TD navara, Bravo and Surf could get over hills in one go, when I would have to take 3 or 4 shots at it, and hen hit it at high speed - ie. redline in 3rd Low!\
-Looking forward to evening up the score once we do some mud driving in southern Vic, where the shorty fearoza always shines.

All up great fun, even having many beers "explode" due to the bumpy terrian. Hey, we just had to stop and drink em! Wouldn't want to be wasteful!

And it was great to roll up in the fearoza to work yesterday, with its coulour having changed from green to bright red dust/mud!! hope to show some photos soon

I know this is a dumb question but did you airdown your tyres before tackling the dunes :?:

Yeah - let em down to about 22 psi.

Would have let em down a little more - I was getting pretty frustrated - but we didnt have a good compressor and would have taken 40mins to get them pumped back up again for some fast sandy track driving

lmao... 22 psi?! omg... u guys... u shouldnt be runnin no higher than 15!!! i ran with 7-8 psi on my mud king mts an the fastest i hit was 70 on that psi with a steady speed.. it did real great.. made the ride all nice an soft an the tires flexed real nice... its the reason why my tires ate my fenders when i took a few 20 ft long jumps (some of them bigger).. tires flexed too far out when i landed an ate what room i had. i also run 235/75R15 so u shouldnt run them no higher than 15. for what u wanted to do.. i'd suggest runnin em around 12 or so.. u can get some good speed there without having to worry about ur side walls...

Did ya run 'em at 22psi 'cause that's what the other cars had theirs down to ???

I agree with PV.....between 10-15psi and you could've walked up those dunes without any problems !!!

Time to invest in a quality Air Compressor !!

c'mon man, its not that funny.

I've never driven on sand like that before - just lots and lots of mud - and yup - thats what the others put their tyres down to. I guess they could get away with it in TD's

Anyway, I had an awesome time so its all good.

ferociousferoza - yeah, a compressor would be good - but that is sorta like priority number 18 on my future purchase list.
