diff gears
diff gears
hi all can you help me i have a 1L suzuki with 31" tyres and when i try go do something hard like a step hill it dies now would a set of 4.88 diff gears help and what would you pay for them
yes they would help but if its ok on the road I would look at just doing the transfer case gears if you only want it for 4x4 use, and still be ok on the road
he has 4.88 centres for sale atm.

I hate going to weddings because all the grandma's used to poke me in the ribs saying you're next, you're next. They've stopped doing it since I started doing it to them at funerals.
Watch your road revs - In another life, Doof (1.0 trayback now being built by Mugginsmoo) ran a 1.0 with 4.88 diffs, a 4:1 transfer (basically the same high range as a stock 1.0) and 31's - it would pull 5200 rpm at 100
I ran a Trail tough 6:1 in mine and it was a bit tall on the road with stock diffs and 34" swampers, with maybe 32's on road it would have been sweet.
Off road both cars had plenty of gears.
Really with 4.88 diffs you need a 5th gear.
A lower transfer case ( even a RH series 4) will correct your high range for your tyres and just give you heaps of low range to play with.
Stock 1.0's with transfer gears are cool- they go much better than you would imagine.

if it comes down to money and you dont need them every 2nd day, then I would save up for them. better off in the long run! If its main purpose in life is to only be off road then look at both, but like steve said,

sorry for the copy paste steve it was just quicker.

well if its high speed stuff then you may struggle with the engine revving its guts out at any sort of speed. or if it is actually something where you only need low range crawlability then it is a good combo. Again the more info provided for the intended use means more appropriate answers

Re: diff gears
I'm assuming you know 1.0 litres have different diffs to 1.3's.bluezook wrote:hi all can you help me i have a 1L suzuki with 31" tyres and when i try go do something hard like a step hill it dies now would a set of 4.88 diff gears help and what would you pay for them
I have 4:88 LJ50 diff gears in my 1.0 litre diffs.
I paid $90 each once at a wrecker, but have since got them much cheaper 2nd hand thru club.
I have a 1.3 with 5 speed now, its useable on road, but too revvy for most.

Arent the N/T 1ltrs the same as the N/T 1.3, as in diff housing and the centers interchangable? I am pretty sure the gears are interchangable?
I have a W/T and havent played with N/T stuff=-Dont need to. dont want to. Just curious. Dont meen to be hijacking but it might be helpfull to newbee N/T drivers.

This has been covered before many times.
The only interchangeable parts between a 1.0 and a 1.3 NT axle assembly front or rear are the front CV's and axles. (1.3 NT CV's are a useful upgrade for a 1.0)
ALL OTHER 1.0 parts are unique and not interchangable with 1.3 NT. The centres are smaller, the gears are smaller (spider and ring and pinion), the housings are smaller and weaker so the spring plates and U bolts are also smaller. The third member is also smaller.
Basically, 1.0 diffs are LJ sized not 1.3 sized, which is why LJ third members and/or diff gears can be swapped into a 1.3.
MG410's (marutis) apparently have 1.3 sized diffs with 4.1:1 ratios but I don't know anyone that has used them in a SJ series sierra. We don't see many marutis in Melbourne.
Steve.
