Getting a locker(front), diff ratio upgrade aswell

Post by Dexter »

Hey guys, I am going to be investing in a front locker for my NL next month and was thinking about doing a diff swap also (4.6s to 4.9s) how hard is this to do?

Both Ian, another kiwi fella & I have done this swap, that I know of. To put the front locker in you need to take the entire diff assembly out anyway.

If you do go for the 4.9's you can use the Left hand side cv from the 4.6 put you must use the 4.9 cv for the RHS as the bolts don't line up otherwise.

AS for being worthwhile - well the jury is out with me, but I would probably do it again, it made a bit of difference on the road where I noticed it the most. I had put 33's on it as it went some way to correcting this.

I have moved to 35's so I think it would be a good idea to move to the 4.9s, what sort of price are we looking at, I would probably get the front done by someone else when I get the locker fitted, but could do the rear with a mate. What sort of price are we looking are to source the diff?

Thanks again.

I've had 5.29s in my '88 for the last year and a half and the difference is huge (especially for my little 4-banger). Am likely to move up to 35s once I wear my 33s out.
