Snorkels and Turbos

Post by Mudzuki »

I recently picked myself up a 04 GU ute, without a snorkel. I have some questions relating to the flow properties of the factory and safari snorkels.

At what sort of boost/power output do the factory/safari snorkles start to become a noticable restriction?

Would you recommend upgrading to a different airbox for better flow?

In the future, I will be looking at upgrading turbo and manifold, and wondering if it will flow sufficient amount of air to be making 150+rwkw?

Thanks

If you are aiming for that sort of power then do a 4" snorkel to start with
rather than doing a little one first. Also yes the factory turbo air filter is borderline for stock power so upgrade early, 80,75 and 60 airboxes can be had cheap and fit in with a few mods and the filters flow enough for the
modded diesel.

Juzza is right! You have a fresh panel with no holes. Go the 4" snorkel, all you need is to figure out what type of steel your going to use?

Gu td42t air filter boxes have been proven to be good for up to 130 rwkw. We havent had a vehicle with higher power yet to see when they start restricting.

Surely if a 3" exhaust can flow enough air for 300+rwkw then it should be good enough as an air supply as well, rather than going to 4". Just my thoughts.

what bout a tb45 or tb48 airbox then? they are for 145 and 185kw
stick a less restrictive filter in it and away you go.

as for the snorkel, i doubt you will have a problem with a standard or safari one. afterall the turbo is sucking the air in.

I'm pretty sure that Safari ( nmo afiliation ) keep in mind the snorkel desing thinking in 80 series turbo diesel 1HD-T that use the same snorkel as non turbo have ..

For stock and sure little more boost should be fine ..

Using this theory that 3" inlet may be enough, would the factory/safari snorkels be 3" from snorkel head to outlet?

Cheers

I did a TD42 for Hobzee of when he was at Pro Comp some years ago, there was an improvement from 127 to 135 rwkW by lifting the airbox lid on a stock airbox and snorkel.
