4E-FTE into lj81

Post by tanshi »

I found some where i can pick up a 4efte for a reasonable price to go into my lj81. Can any one tell me what gearbox i would be looking at to mate up with this? also any info on any common issue with these, and problems i might encounter.

starlet engines are good. mum used to have one and no problems at all.

All the E series Toyota engines are FWD so there is no RWD bellhousing available for this engine. You will have to custom make anything to mount it RWD.

That's a shame - I think the Starlet motor would be ideal for a sierra.

Can you sell me the turbo at an even more reasonable price??? :D

e motor

If the Starlet E series motor is so good, would it be worth getting Dellow to make a bellhousing to fit it to a Sierra 5 speed?

Any idea of costs on that? If its affordable I may be interested. Group buy perhaps?

Just remember its going to take a lot more than a custom bellhousing to fit this engine in RWD. There is going to be issues with the clutch/flywheel and starter motor if your trying to mount it to the Sierra gearbox.
Other areas would be the fact that RWD engine mounts would need to be manufactured. The throttle body points to the firewall when turned around so this may need some work. The turbo and manifold may be located in the wrong position requiring a custom manifold to get everything to point in the right direction.
The reason noone has gone to the trouble of converting this engine to RWD in the past is because there is so much work involved to do so when there are better alternatives out there.

I managed to fit a Baleno 1.6 into a sierra so i understand how much hassle fitting a FWD engine into a RWD can be. however i have also put in a request with dellows ;)

Dellows are only gonig to be interested in commercially viable swaps, unless you want a $3000 bellhousing.

A baleno into a sierra is easy - all the "correct" parts are available ( I am doing one now) but a complete oddball - what's the point?

A 4Agze will murder the starlet motor and has been done a gazillion times.

The starlet motor was the one i was looking at because its a 1.3 to go in the LJ81 rather than pushing my luck with a larger capacity motor.

I thought QLD was pretty relaxed with capacity increase?

I could see more potential problems with emissions with a JDM only motor regardless of capaity than capacity itself.

From what i have seen and heard QLD is not really all that flexable with engine capacities. Unless you know an engineer on a first name basis. But i guess if its going to be a tough swap i'll have to look at other options. I would go a 1.3 jimny G13BB but there are not alot of those around. Any one know what's been done in LJ's before in QLD???

You will be on first name basis by the end of the job :D

The G13BB swap would be a good one. The manifolding and cooling arrangement makes for a neat fit.

Another good swap would be a carry/sierra/cappuccino 660, if you can get the emissions signed off. Judging by the LWB on Ebay, someone managed in QLD.

depends on what you want with it.

I have heard of whole wrecks going at auction for $2.5K, but the going rate from a wrecker for effectviely a cut, low K, with auto and full loom including TCC (trans control) and shifter would run about $3.5K

Personally, I'd build one with a auto (they're actually shorter than a sierra manual and will drive better offroad, but a sierra manual would also work fine.

A jimny manual is not as suitable due to the shift housing.

This was the ad. Went for $2850, which seems fair.
