I am not into winch challenges but do a fair bit of stump and log pulling. Fitted a 7.8Hp motor a few months ago along with a couple of Beretta's solenoids in parallel. As has been said above there is little increase in speed but a noticeable increase in torque and the motor runs a lot cooler.

As I have mentioned before these motors have no indication on them at all as to where they are made or who makes them. Traxion claim they are made in USA but there is no confirmation marking on the motor. The typewritten instruction sheet which came with them can only be described as "basic" They do look well made though and I was impressed the way it pulled over a 20year old silver birch this afternoon - roots and all - admittedly with a 3:1 purchase. No sign of stalling or overheating it just pulled the trees right out with the chain located about 18ft above ground.

They cost around $900 incl GST in NZ

So is there any more info on these motors.

Does a Warn and a Premier have the same dimension motor, ie. are they interchangeable?

I'm the guy that has just fitted 2 of these motors using one of Wazza adpaters. I got one of the first to be used in NZ in the middle of 2005. This motor has done 2 years comps and has just had a birthday and has been fitted to the adpater with a new motor (my spare that never got used). They pull hard and for a long time. A 6hp Warn with 24v will pull faster for a short time but when it gets real heavy it will die and the 7.8 will just keep going.
They are a direct replacement for a high mount but you do need to be careful fitting them as the bolts tend to be bent and there is NO clearance inside so I've sleeved the bolts with heat shrink to protect from shorts. The first motor I had shorted through a bent bolt the first time started so take care. It is the only bad thing I can say though.
I was supposed to be using this winch at the Rotorua Winch Challenge this weekend but due to ecu problems I've had to pull out so I'll now get to test the winch before using it in a comp. (which has to be a good thing I guess)

So what is the go with these? I'm in the hunt for another winch, before I go buying an 9500XP tell me about these motors?
Do they fit a premier winch? What are the dimensions, will they fit a low mount OK? When are they being imported, and how much?

Cheers

Found out that these have been used in winch challenges in NZ for ten years without failure. The only problems are when you put 24 through a 12...they do it but are not guaranteed.

The 7.8 24V gives the biggest increase in both torque and no load speed...apparently very noticeable.

The 7.8 12V is only slightly quicker at no load, but under load the extra torque really shows...and from what we discussed they have a far superior duty cycle and are tougher...and I'm talking long deep sticky NZ mud pulls.

Cheers,
Simon.

Well, I have a 24v version of the 7.8hp motor, and a new solenoid set up in the freight on the way over. Will be interesting to see how it goes.
Figured a new motor won't go astray, and if the Premier can't handle it, I'll bolt it onto a 9.5XP and see what happens there.

Just now gotta set the car up with 24v supply for it.
