NEW Winch Challenge Interest. CCDA???? Organisers.

Post by Blue Lightning »

Just thought I would see if there are any event organisers out there that would like to hold an event here in South East QLD or Northern NSW to suit the Faster style winch challenge trucks that are setup for longer and faster stages like OBC and Cliffhanger. Preferrably 1000m and longer per stage with technically driveable hills.

Hopefully it would be CCDA sanctioned and professionally run which brings it inline with the rest of Australia.

There are plenty of event organisers in VIC and NSW so come up and give it a go. The word will spread if it was to happen.

Also are there Competitors that suit this category other than myself that want stages that are longer than 300m. Hopefully we would get to use third gear for more than 1 stage.

Competitors show your interest so the event organisers can see that there is an interest for this style of event and lets make it happen.

Sounds great but a lot of the organisers are very busy with the events they have going. I am sure that you will find a mix of winching and longer runs like what you after in XI.

Have you looked into starting an event your self.

I would be interested in competing if the entry cost is reasonable and the event is run in Northern NSW or even somewhere like The Springs 4x4 park near Warrick in very southern QLD.

Are you thinking of a 3 day event or longer?

TODD my parents have a propity 25 mins in from Port Macquarie, thats 7hrs
sth of Bris & about 5hrs nth of Sydney.bitumen all the way except
last 4.26klm is dirt,on permenant creek,this & surrounding propitys
would lend themselfs to the type of event you are talking about ,I to would
like to have an event that is held somewhere new,as much as we want to
support MMM & landcruiser park,to our familys its just the same old place we
go compin at.Thats why cliffhanger is so enticeing,,we can take our familys
& the kids peewee 50s as well,so the whole family is happy(not just dad)
AT xmas I scouted over 11 diferent stages, without even searching ,most long
enough to get the temp guage working.some short.& also night & GPS runs.
Ihave held comps there with Glenn Binskin, when I washis nav & lived down
there. There is a rodeo ground hall, toilets &showers, all within 4klm of most
stages, could be used as PARK FERMEE or event H/Q & heaps more
....the event could be called ""THE OZZIE EASTCOAST CHALLENGE"" as much
as i would love to do somthing like this im too buisy,i have offered it to some
of the big orginisers but they are buissy too,,any one got any ideas??????

Piglet sounds like a top idea mate. Even though i am not a racer, i do love to attend these types of events and having longer stages so some of the bigger donks can actually open up would be great.

Its a pitty i am busy at the moment as well as i would definitely love to jump on board and see where it goes.

Good luck with it and i will certianly keep my eyes on this post.

I am definitely not an event organiser, but thought that if there was enough interest out there something might happen.

Piglet that sounds great "Ozzie East Coast Challenge".

I was hoping for an event organiser who likes a bit of speed in their events and mixed with some technical driving could take it up.

More of a 4WD challenge with only SOME winching rather than a winch challenge where the fastest winch wins. I am sure spectators would love to see some fast technical driving action.

Yeh Fester, that would pretty much sum it up. We are not changing to off road racing, just the format for more long distance stages with some giddyup with some winching. The outback challenge and cliffhanger are great examples, not just a hole weekend held in two or three creek beds. Basically Qld needs an event like the two mentioned just in a mini version, over a weekend.

Kevy, If you like the idea, why don't you have a go at organising the event after you sell your truck?

Todd great idea mate, NSW is primed for an event like OBC or CH, a lot of people up here only ever experience short course events such as Nissan Trials, Tuff Truck etc, so I think you would get a lot of interest. I know of probably six cars minimum from people I know in shitney that would be serious starters, and I know bugger all people in sydney!

Piglets parents joint sounds like just the spot!

Top idea on both counts!

i spose the cars that would win or place well would be your high cost, coil over, 200plus rwkw offroad buggy's. how would your lower end cost cars be any threat to your stadium racers. just saying that this event would suit a minority not majority.

HEY MMM YOU HEAR WHAT THEY WANT,,WHY NOT PUT ONE ON,
YES ,,I KNOW THAT THIS TYPE OF ISNT AS SPECTATOR,FRIENDLY
AS WINCH CHALLENGES..BUT HOW ABOUT THE COMPETITORS,
AS YOU MENTIONED TO ME THE OTHER DAY ABOUT THE XI EVENT
COMPARED TO CLIFFHANGER,SEEMS TO BE THAT THERE COULD
BE ANOTHER COMP OUT THERE FOR YOU...A LONG DISTANCE &
HIGH SPEED WINCH COMP,& AT A NEW CENTRAL LOCATION...
THE PROBLEMS GRINNER HAD WITH THE COUNCIL AT PORT,WASNT
BECAUSE HE WANTED TO HOLD A COMP,IT WAS THAT HE WANTED TO
OPEN A FWD PARK, WE ALL UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE A LOT ON YOUR
PLATE,& THAT 2008 WOULD BE BOOKED UP WITH EVENTS ALLREADY
BUT THERES A PROPITY & GOOD CENTRAL LOCATION JUST BEGGIN
FOR A DEDICATED COMPITITION ORGANISER

hows that saying go dave......IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME !!!!!!!!!!

I've been around motorsport as an official, spectator and competitor since i was 16. I've driven, navi'd, organised and ran events of various nature. I am a low budget racer. My car would owe me less than 20 grand but lots and lots of hours...
I get JACK of people complaining that the big dollar cars have an advantage. These guys are the pinnacle of our sport. They're the cars people come to watch and want to see. If they're lucky enough to be able to spend big dollars then lets put on events for them.
We came 2nd in the cliffhanger this year in a car you could build for less than 35 grand if you done the majority of work yourself. We never expected to win but we went to do the best we could. And we did.
I say bring on the events and let the big dollar cars race!

Cheers Dan

if you look around alot of people complain about the cost and upkeep of these trucks to remain at the pinnacle of this event. the sport will slowly die off if no new people come thru the ranks cause there low budget comp car gets left for dead. maybe the same way mud racing went. for eg people build winches for specific stages and even have 2 so they can have a pto just for 1 stage in the outback and mid mount elec for other stages. just imagine how much a top guy spends a year to keep up there possition. some would easily do over 20k per year in upkeep alone. not including blown motors or a new winch idea, new tyres and rope per event etc

i wouldn't be supprised if we see fully imported US stadium trucks with the only real mod to do an outback or similar event , being a huge hydraulic winch. lets say $400k

I could not agree with Ruffy more, well said.

I used to think like you streblo, but I changed my mind. I am a very low budget competitor and I could not disagree with you more mate. You need to get out there and experiece it for yourself

You get amongst it and see, you can compete with these people on many stages and where you can't you get a buzz out of seeing how hard they can go. For many of us it is not just winning, it's is competing in your own right.

This sport has never been stronger, richer or had a brighter future, it is going from strenght to strength.

hey Streblo have you not seen outback challenge, or any of the extreme
winch challenge series, because these events run two classes..
1 for highly modified & 1 for mildly modified (ie winch, lockers tyre size
limits,no motor mods, basicyy factory with extras) this is so newby 4x4 competiters can have a go,running same tracks as the long time competitors
(notice I didnt say profesionals,or big $$$ rigs)mainly because these guys
have been in the comp scene for a long time,& during this long time, they
have been progresivly modifing there rigs,to where tyey are today,,
& just rember these guys all started as beginners as well, its just their
passion for the sport that has pushed them through, whithc has made
sponcers notice them, this too could be you, dont begrudge these guys,
join them & learn from them, but do it in a class you feel comfortable
with, but most of all do it because you enjoy it.

what non of us want is to turn this into a safari event, just a good hard winch
comp, that the stages are a bit longer,& gps as well..because usually we have just hit the finish line,as we are getting warmed up,turn 300-500mtr
stages into 1-20klm stages

i also have competted in these events for a while now. but how long do you think people like rohan etc wanna keep spending on there cars to keep in front. i bet you he would rather not spend that or leave the sport earlier cause of how much they have spent over the years. most people could be mortgage free if the sport was capped. one decent roll over and basically start again. eg cass jones WA another $60 k or more. just went for a drive in the dunes.

i would love this as i come from a offroad racing back ground . it would stop it becoming a who can spend the most on a winch thing . ie driver skill as well as winch and navi skill.

Same , same... I'm from off road back ground and love the mix of driving skill and winching. If i was closer i'd have a look at doing something up there.. I'm in the market for a new pet!

Oh just for the record.. mud racing died because it was shitarse boring to do and to watch after the first few years because it didn't progress.. It stayed the same and became stale. That is all!

Contact Mike Smith though the CCDA and get him to run through what needs to be done. There is a manual on unning an event that also includes permits required toilets etc.

Sounds great. A committee of locals and it can happen.

[quote="beretta" NSW is primed for an event like OBC or CH,

NSW has got OBC & Cliffhanger.

Just one thing as an organiser, what do you want:-

A:- Winch Challenge

or

B:- High speed event

If you are wanting both, then yes you should try the XI as Mrs Ludacris had said, because last year and the upcoming one has plenty of long & past 2nd gear low range stuff.

But back to another event. If you want spectators there it has to be done on one property. Yes Ian did offer the property several years ago and agin the other week. The biggest hassel that you have in NSW is the Council & EPA, so without some feed back from them (carried out by a person in the area) it is very hard too try & do something.

So first up guys you have to tell me what type of event you want, if you want speed most of the time as most of the OBC & Cliffhanger trucks are set up for, and nil or very little winching. (Thanks but not interested).

Or a more techanical (XWC style) that requires more winching then high speed driving, length is not the issue it depends on the property if it can accomodate it, Yes I am interested.

But if we were to do it when would it be run??????

Cheers

As the name 4WD suggests (4 Wheel DRIVE) notice the drive, it's not 4 Wheel WINCH. I have been in events up here in QLD and also just saw
on 4WD TV that 4WD's on a driveable hill that still have forward momentum are stopped by the furious whistle blows just to make them winch. Lets drive the hills if we can like they do in VIC and NZ.

I wanted to get some numbers together to see how many competitors and organisers would like to compete and run in this type of 4WD challenge. Not to see who is against it.

DAVE (MMM).
I'm not here to compete with your events because this format is totally different to what you run and as you have stated several times you are not interested in running this type of event. Some have said about doing XI in this thread but as you have claimed it has hundreds of winches over the 8 days and is purely a WINCH challenge. I could guarentee that if you ran a 4WD challenge with longer stages and less winches, your entry list would triple in numbers.

As for the cheaper / less modified / less experienced, I am sure that we could cater for a different class if the numbers didn't fill for a challenge class. But as a few have said, they like competing against the more expensive rigs to show them that its not about how much money a rig is worth, it's about driver and navi skill.

The event would be held over a weekend with Friday night - Saturday - Sunday etc.

As I have said I wouldn't know how to run an event but I do know that I want a different format to the events than just winching in and out of creeks and it looks like there are several others in the same boat. It's good to see that we have a lot of interest in this type of event in QLD and in NSW.

I have had several contacts with properties between Sydney and Brisbane that would be available to host this type of event and now just need an event organiser to step up to the mark to follow through with it. It looks like there are heaps of people offering to help out to run this event. I will call CCDA today to see what is required to host this type of event.

As they say, Build it and they will come.
