Australian Safari

Post by kirragc »

For the fans of 4x4 rally events the Australian Safari is running as we speak through some magnificent country in NW WA
Theres only about 20 cars but heaps of bikes. Looks like a few inspired by Charlie Boorman.
Any how after day 1 Connor and Smith (Wayne) are in 4th and are only a few seconds off the pace. Hes finally got a Co-drive where he can stay in the car :D
Looks like the Holden backed team is the pacesetter though with 2 time winner (and 6 times on a abike) Hederics at the wheel.

Any way Connor is a veteran privateer in this style of racing with a few 3rd and 4ths in the past.

Only 3000ks to go

Conners/Smith have now dropped off the overall leaders board and aren't listed as competing on the last 2 individual stages of leg 4

Must have some serious damage of some sought :bad-words:

But Emmins/Tjepkema (Chippa) are still going strong  They are 10th overall and slowly moving back up the leaders board after being in 7th position earlier in the week. They had a bad stage on SS10 which dropped them from 7th down to 13th.

Hope they keep moving back up through the positions

i was wondering if that was Chip,
They didnt DNF but got a penalty for something, they are also last out the gate on the leg to Meekathara.

Edit:
Just heard they broke a swivel ball off the diff and lost four hours in the repair.
They didnt have a support crew until 2 weeks ago, when a mate scrounged enough sponsorship from Commander to provide a support vehicle.
Didnt take that many spares but they did take diffs

I just got home from the first half of the safari, I have been shooting photos with Randal from Dirtcomp magazine.
Awsome event

I could post up some of the 13 gig of photos I have, but you will all have to go buy the next issue of dirtcomp :D

What does the car look like?

There was a couple of GU's that were looking pretty fast.

On the port headland to Newman stage, the guys from Kalgroolie in the silver and blue jakaroo had a high speed roll, the car was not looking so good, though they walked away from the crash.

Owen and Cairns currently third overall and first in class, they are doing a great job.
Robinson and Robinson broke down and took a 2 hour penalty.

Emmins and Chip still inside the top ten
Special mention to Moralee and Flood who are tenth in a completely unmodified car. A Prado off the showroom floor is beating half the FIA and CAMs cars
