4.88 enough to turn 37's

hi all, just wondering if 4.88 centers will be sufficent to turn 37's beneath a 2.8 turbo diesel 4runner, ive been told 5.29's are weak or are shit for road use... as 37's are, currently i have 33's with 4.88's for daily use just wanted to know if the 4.88's wil be ok with 37;s for weekend abuse.

im also interested in knowing what diff ratios would be recomended with 37s!! mine will be powered by a 1UZ but i only have 4.1s at the moment.

im running 37s and only 4.1 ratio with the v8, and the truck will sit on 120klms an hour all day long, but with the old diesel the truck would want to turn around and run when it came to hills and big tyres, more cubes is the only answer

I´m running now with 58 full gear ratio and think it´s still too long, with 33"s... :lol: Need to get shorter for swamp crawling.

on my petrol 80s i run 35s with 4:58s and it was well worth it. First only slightly runs away on the steepest of hills now and overall driving esp on rd is heaps better.

4.88 are basically the next gear down so should be well suited for 37s but also depends if your diesel or petrol and your motor size in general.

Remember the lower your diff gears are the smaller the pinion so the weaker it is though if you have lockers then its a little tougher again.

It all depends on engine thar are you running, tranny, rig weight, tires weight and finaly but important the terrain and typo of offroad.

I have a mate with a 1KZ-T in a minu truck running 4.11 and can move 38" easy ..

I'm run overal 4.92 and need to go under 120km/h coz are pretty well geared but it's nice for rocks and trail ..

Post your overal plans and configuration ( base rig ) to get better opinion ..

5.29s would be less strain. youll have to ride the clutch to go anywhere and itll be slow in 3rd up hills and flat to the floor to hold 110kphh. thats on a 4y so diesel would be worse on hills and highway. but twin cases helps offroad
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

The original silverbullet ran 36swampers with 488s on the old 2.2diesel 4speed.
Pushed them ok on road, was always in 4th gear anyway so 3rd gear used to cop a canning.
Anyway back to your dilemma, i would run 4.8s with your turbo should be ok on road, if your not happy with it in the bush you could always throw in some gears, mate put a 5speed behind his 2.8 out of a late model surf and the gearing in the box/transfer set up was a bit lower and now he runs my old 35pedes and says the truck crawls slower.

I run 38.5's with 5.2 ratios in my BJ42 (3.4 diesel) with a 5 speed & it gets up & goes great onroad.
I think you should get away with the 4.88's but a 5 speed would better suited.

cheers guys,

i will be running twin stock ratio cases the std 5speed g52 transfer + A std top shift case behind the std g52 5speed. The motor is currently a 2l turbo with 4.88's and 33's and it goes but yes is slow as fuck compared to most things, but its not a race car and the old 2l is tired i have a early 3l with a bit of head work done to it that il be fabing my current turbo up to. hopefully a few more cubes Boosted will push her along a bit faster, as for weight tube bar, sliders rear bar are about it, no winch yet as i dont have the coin..

iv got a 2.8 turbo deisel runnin 4.88s and pushin 35s. the 4.88s is the only way to go if your going to be running big rubber.

by the way, 4.88s arent that strong.... just found a second busted centre. but i'm pretty sure it is because of fudged up bearings.... dont drop it too much with big tyres.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

I have 4.8s, turbo 2.8, 36" simex on my LN106 and it will sit on the freeway around 100kmh fine, it will go faster but I find that anywhere above that and it starts drinking alot of fuel. Also the speedo is dead accurate with that setup.

The 4.8s will be fine offroad, generally only the people that really abuse their trucks blow them. There are people who get around on 5.29s that dont break them, and then there are even people who drive on 4.3s offroad with smaller tyres and manage to masscre the centres. No diff centre is infalliable on the hiluxs, it just comes down to how much bouncing up tracks v right foot you intend on using that will decide how long they last. Drive smart = no damage.

yeh awesome guys cheers, another thing im having dificulty getting my head around is the diffrence with 23 and 21 spline transfercase output shafts, im about to put in twin stock ratio cases the std behind my g52 (21spline) mated to a top shift 81-83 tranny via a trailgear twin adaptor. apparently the 21 spine shaft have a week spot and are prone to shear, there is a 23 spline upgrade availible but i need the idiots guid to, to work out whats needed, ie if i change the rear cases shaft to the 23 spline or What? :?: got me stuffed im sure its pretty simple.

mine is a extra cab bundera with 80s diffs, a tube rear end, 1UZ (4.0L V8) 37" onroad tires 42" offroad, 50% transfer reduction gears

atm 4.1:1 diffs should i change to 4.88:1 in the neer future??

Lets figure ..

100 series V8 come with 4.11 to run 32" tires overal good performance.

42" represent 31% more tire diameter over 32" stock tires that come factory with 80 series axles 4.11 and more weight that actually you are running.

5.29 barely represent 29% of reduction over 4.11 but 37" are only 16% more tire diameter over 32".

At the point and seen those numbers you can figure that your 37" with 4.88 V8 power and less weight give to you a nice overall performance on road, but I'm more inclined to choose 4.56 or keep the 4.11 for on road ..

And the 50% low range reduction give to you nice performance no matter what tire uses off road.

Just grab the 21 spline adaptor for twin stock ratios they will be fine there arnt that many that have actually broke. Then there is no confusion, Have been running a dual 21 spline for 4yrs with 4:1 in the rear with 38s and no damage yet. If you go to gears later you just grab the 21 spline gears,

i used to run 4.88's with 35's in a lux with v6 chev (140kw at flywheel) drove great but a little to high geared for highway went down to 4.3's went beautiful even with 37's on. but for a standard diesel your gonna struggle with 37's no matter what diff ratio u have but i do have a set of 4.88's if your keen

yeah i know its going to be slow as shit with 37's but the twin cases will help off road, il run either the 33 claws i now run with the 4.88's or a set of 35 at's i have. but i dont have the 2.8t in yet stil the shitty 2.4t. i would like to run 37's off the pavement, but i would like to beable to semi comfortably drive to the track with the 37's, just trying to get the best out of what i have- would love a v8 but too thirsty and they dont like to go swimming. :D

Thinking a little more in that ..

New Lux 3.0 turbo intercooled come with 168 HP at the flywheel. and Come with 30" tires aprox manuals with 3.54 R&P ( pretty long ) and could move pretty fine up to 33"

with 4.10 could more easay 35" or 37" and it's only a 3.0 engine ..

At this scenario going with 4.88 in this hi lux means you would run 39" or 40" ( supposing that the axles and drive train can support ) justn thinking in numbers and no based in any xperience with this new Lux ..

Here are a few with 33" and stock gearing .. and are pretty fast ..

want to know if i should leave me diffs or change them got a had a 3y 85 with a 5 speed and just putting a v8 308 with the same gearbox would the diff be ok for it or should i change it
