NEW Winch Challenge Interest. CCDA???? Organisers.
Moderator: evanstaniland
Have just spoken to Mike Smith from CCDA. Sounds easy enough to make happen.
We do need CCDA accredited marshalls, which they will send someone up to train the people that want to be accredited. They will also send someone up to help with the setup of the event for the weekend to make sure it complies to the CCDA rules. He stated that it must be a proffessionally run event which is what we are aiming at. Insurance will be covered for the event by CCDA. Also with CCDA accreditation marshalls and competitors can be involved with Cliffhanger and OBC.
CCDA will also help with advertising for the event.
Go to http://ccda.info/cms/index.php for any info.
All competitors must be a member of the CCDA and their 4WD's must comply to their manual of motorsport rules for scrutineering.
Stages should have at least two obstacles so it is not just a bush bash event.
This makes the event have the same safety rules nationally and hopefully a safer sport for us all.
I was also told that it is a big topic down in VIC at the moment for having the stages longer. To our QLD standards they already have long stages so we are behind the 8 ball already. This has the potential of being a national event where competitors come from everywhere to compete with stages that a lot of competitors want.
We have had offers from several places to host the event, there is interest at Warwick, Armidale, Port Macquarie and a private property 1 hour west of Brisbane.

Yeah it's easy enough to make happen with the right team Todd. As you've stated you don't want to organise an event and that's good that you make the point clear.
What we have here is an opportunity for someone to make a stand and get into it. There is a real potential there. With so many comp rigs around the country and so many events i personally think we don't need to cater specifically for a class or type of vehicle. No-one can do all of the events. How many cars do Xtreme events and the OBC and the Cliff hanger and the Alpine and the Ateco in one year.. There's room for everyone i think.
IF i was further North it'd be on Todd... Maybe if we get off the ground down here we can look at running something up that way if it hasn't happened by then.
Cheers Dan

[quote="Blue Lightning"]As the name 4WD suggests (4 Wheel DRIVE) notice the drive, it's not 4 Wheel WINCH. I have been in events up here in QLD and also just saw
on 4WD TV that 4WD's on a driveable hill that still have forward momentum are stopped by the furious whistle blows just to make them winch. Lets drive the hills if we can like they do in VIC and NZ.
dont worry, they got big whistles in VIC to. hi speed sounds good with longer stages etc , all for it but im in VIC and next year is already full with 4 rnds ENGIL, Alpine, Outback, Cliffhanger, navruns, navnites. think i may need to win tatts so i can compette in above events already, travel to all and time off work to get to and from. then find time and try and win tatts again to repair vehicle in between competions. would love to go to QLD and do XI etc BUT WINNING TATTSLOTTO 3 TIMES IN 1 YEAR IS ASKING A BIT MUCH. All for this event but maybe a few people in similar boats . HOPE IT HAPPENS for the sport to attract more competitors etc

I have been thinking of the stages that could be run uot of port mac
*fri night-
SS 1 :motorcana style about 2-5klm & limited obsticles( warmup)
SS 2 :combination of motorcana & gps with at least 2 winches 5-10klms long
SS 3 :full gps, with at least 2 winches, plenty of obsticals, but drivable, plenty of oppertunitys to hit top speed up 10-20klms long
*saturday- SS4 to SS9
a total of 6 stages all on simular format to above, with 2 extra stages as backup for just incase the day moves quicker than expected
*sunday- SS10 to SS12
a total of 3 stages,shorter & with at least 1 winch per stage(posibly drivable)
to try & keep the day short distances 500mtr to 1klm so a presentation can be over earlypeople packed up & on the road by mid afternoon
a posibility of pushing one of sundays SS's into a singel saturday night SS
all just possibilities, but this is sort of what I was thinking, are we thinking of the same thing Todd..

dave, i think what they are talking about is like stage 10 rnd2 this year. a kay or so long with a whinch involved.... i thought it was the best fun ever. but thats because i had to get out for the winch.
i think it would be a blast for alot of people but alot would also get turned off by the complete disrespect you need to have for your car to do any good. repairs would be a major problem for alot of people. how many nissan owners can change a front radius arm mushroom bush in a few minutes between stages? what about alternators dieing in the silty water, most people who are just out for fun wouldnt have a clue.
id be up for it for sure. but the rules need to be strict, and enforced. metcalfe has good fair and strict rules...
the split competition is a good idea too. all the hardcore guys can fight it out together and the joe blows can have a chop and see if they like it. but again it has to be clearly defined who is what and what is classed as a "normal" vehicle.
id be happy to help out if i didnt compete. infact id enjoy helping out just to see the faster action which is what i love to watch.

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
i rection i could get 4 people in for the first one and i maybe able to help with setup i think u should have something like this say over one 3k or more on one ss two obsticles one hard as (hard enough everyone will have to winch) one were it is just driveable so u have. driver skill, navi skill, winch power & car handling all in one event . my two cents worth .
it will go or it will blow
All good thanks for the input. The more input we get the better it will be for everyone. We want to test all aspects of 4WDing so good points made.
We have a fair few people keen to compete and to help organise which is great. Looks like we should get something happening earlyish next year, maybe March. Just have to look into the events calendar to make sure it's not too close to other events with similar types of competition.

Hey Todd
What you are suggesting sounds excellent to me, nothing better than some low range redline action, love to hear the rev limiter working and we can't get that happening in most other comps except OBC and CLIFFHANGER. I love the idea off using Piglets parents place close to both NSW & QLD, March is also good timing as there's not much on in NSW at the start of the year.
SO BRING IT ON

new challenge
bring it on Todd i would love to see this type of event in nsw as i can't justify spending as much on a winch as i do on the car. also like the idea of me having to do some work not just my navi.

build it as a winch truck just make it go quick! I dont know why people are talking of "stadium truggies" no good on a winch stage are they?chunderlicious wrote:cmon someone pick it up..... its giving me something new to build the car too. something affordable.

Dont just start with a warn high mount with a 6hp motor and as you get more experience upgrade with the mods to your winch and truck. When "Bi Green Meanie" and I first started we had a 2nd hand high mount with a 2hp motor but we still had a go. He's still useing the same winch, it's now got 6hp and titan solenoids with some braceing. Dont try to run b4 you can crawl just have a go with what you can afford to gain experience because that (experience) is pricelesschunderlicious wrote:yeah but the thought of spending 6 grand on a winch scares the shit outa me

you don't need a $10,000 dollar winch to be competitive, i also only have a standad Hi Mount with 6hp motor on a full bodied 80 ( now cut into a ute ) and managed a top 10 finish at the quarry stages of the OBC.

you dont need a 100k car to go fast,,the sort of speed we are talking about is achievable by most cars, what we want are the sort of stages where you can put peddle to metal in sections, not 100klm of it,like dirt roads, but good sections between the hard stuff where you have no choice to drive skillfully, accuratly & quite often slowly just to avoid major damage or winching,,basicly a winch challenge with some longer open sections
How about a 4wd rally event with speeds up to 130k's but mostly around 80to 90 k's through 4wd sections, events like this were held many years ago. they where called toowoomba 4wd rally and bush and beach rally, we used to race around landcruiser park and drive test tracks and things like hilux hill as fast as we could, these events were a lot of fun and you didnt need big budgets even though a few class 7 offroad racing vehicles did compete aahhh the old days

Those event were run by Allan Lawson. He has just run one the other weekend after his "Yaraka Event" was postponed.
I believe that between him and Landcruiser Mountain Park they are running a Series next year for these type of vehicle's.
If you are interested give the park a ring and talk to Alben (07) 5497 3164

I don’t think making an event more technical or high speed is the answer either. What about making a couple of stages driver friendlier and to off set things making a couple of stages with more winching.
Up at landcruiser on Saturday a mate drove all three winch hills because he was able to drive up the hill then reverse line himself up and hit it. Was a great feeling to watch him drive them but would have been even better to be the driver.
