or your best option
piss your crapper off and get a GU like mine
plenty of power to overtake you up hills even when towing over 2t up the hills on the F3

Re: want to do... wanna tow trailer need lots more power out
how long do you plan on keeping the car?
work that out, then you will have to work out if its worth throwing more thousands at it for only another 12 mths - if thats how long until you wanna update.
Turbo, supercharger, smaller tires, all options, also depends who is doing the work on first 2..
how many klms on engine? maynot handle more neddies...
you wont get an engine swap for 3k.

dude, like i told you not long ago on msn,
efi yours with a computer that can handle some boost..
then see how it goes,
and hunt around for a cheap turbo and manifold etc... then one weekend il come over and we can hook it all up.
add a cheap cooler and you will be fine...

OR
do what ive been telling you all along..
scrap your crapper, save up some coin, get a GU ute and go from there..
u want a ute, u want something reliable, you have the goodies to pu in it already..
it would be a better option in the long run... especially if you plan on keeping the car for another 10 years..

How much do you want to spend?
I've turboed quite a number, fitted old chevs, fitted TB45 with custom EFI(suprisingly good) and am currently fitting an L76 Gen4 and 4l80e with a custom tune, my ride not quite going yet... Gen 3 turbo, not for towing though it would tow well.

5k dosent go very far towards a quality job.
Even roughly
Roller turbo $ 1800
Manifold $550
Cooler $300
oil water hoses $200
Boost pipes $500 in mild steel
Fuel system, petrol efi, pump, ecu, wiring, tuning, injectors, manifold, pressure reg.......$4000 + depending on quality and HP output
or LPG $3000 less rebate.
Or low boost carby, box carby, tune distributor regraph, electronic high energy ignition ect $2500 +
You still got to bolt it all together, do an exhaust, silcone hose, mount cooler, couple days labour.
for 5k I'd do extractors, electronic ignition, exhaust, look at the air intake and set the carbyy up on the dyno, have some change and see how it goes.

Is there much improvement to be found in Exhaust?PGS 4WD wrote:5k dosent go very far towards a quality job.

I have a TB42 EFI, standard, was factory 3.9 gears, now 4.6's, was factory 32's, now 31's, and it is still a turd. My mates, diesel 60 has more power, with a bigger load on!
I was thinking maybe an exhaust, but I have to justify the expense. Are different extractors better or worse?

a decent exhaust and decent intake should make a noticable difference.CRUSHU wrote:

first thing to do to an N/A is to get it breathing right

maybe you shoulda spent a little more coin and got a td42tbogged wrote:depends on your expectations..CRUSHU wrote:Is there much improvement to be found in Exhaust?
I was told of massive tire smoking difference in the Td42 with extractors, and didnt notice a ***** thing different. maybe i had hoped for more, but was shattered.

thats what I was thinking, especially when I went from 3.9 gears to 4.6's, the only major difference is the fuel cost on long trips, it's still slow.bogged wrote:depends on your expectations..CRUSHU wrote:Is there much improvement to be found in Exhaust?

Hard to justify the $1000 or less that it will take to get done.

I've acheived great results with electronic ignition and exhaust on carby motors. Increased power but moreso drivebility and low rpm torque. Being you have EFI i would still do the exhaust and then fit an Intercepter or similar inline chip to retify the timing and fuel. My boss has a GU manual 4.5 dead stock at the moment that makes 80 rwkw on our dyno, its mixtures and timing aren't good with the factory tune. We've fitted 2 GU 4.5's into GQ's in the last 6 month and tuned them with a Holden Delco computer (retrofit to efi) the auto made 97 rwkw and the manual 107 rwkw, same engine better tune. I've also retro-fitted larger throttle bodies and intake ducting with good results above 3000 rpm.
It would come in under budget, the best results are acheived if tuned on premium and you are happy to use premium.
