1HZ Vacuum Pump

Post by me3@neuralfibre.com »

Why does Toyota put a vacuum pump on their diesels? The ABS is electric not vacuum. The only vacuum I have found is one solenoid for idle up with AC. If it goes cactus, has anyone disabled it?

The ABS is electric not vacuum = Electric pump hyrdaulic accumulator. No vacuum booster.

im guessing it probably depends on the car... ie on 80series you have a vacuum line for the brake reservoir/booster and for the AC idle up.

In 100 / 105 series the bacc brake ti's made by a electric ( very expensive ) pump ..

There are some vac electric for about 300 USD in the market ..

Apart from being Clutch and Brake booster, some of the toyota motors use the vaccum to shut down (13bt)

isn't ABS just a fancy DCV controlling the flow of "pressurised" brake fluid to the individual calipers as required by the computer and determined by the axel rotational inputs?

I don't know about the internals of the thing, but mine has a hydraulic pump on it. They have a huge resovoir of fluid, so their operation is significantly different from a simple inline pressure control.

I wonder why toyota didn't ditch the vacuum pump as it's not used.

I've often thought the same thing, on ABS equipped 100's the only vac device is the a/c idle up as you say.

I'm sure the vehicle will run fine without the idle up, however your a/c won't be as efficient at idle, and things like the p/s may load up at low speed & low rpm corners (eg.supermarket car park).

Its easier for Toyota to make them all with vacuum....the std 100 still has vacuum booster on brakes, and runs 1hz the gxl would do without it all together, as the 4.2 is hard to stall
