hey all, im selling my 4runner and looking at getting something smaller as im a uni student, and i was thinking cheap, i was thinking, sierra lol. now my friend has a 88 model with about 3 inch lift, rear locker, 31's, and a carby vit motor in it, and the thing bloody goes ANYWHERE, he's never gotten into a situation which he couldnt get out of.
nowww ive been scouring the forums, trader, ebay, for them, and i found one near me (im on the gold coast) on here and its on boost cruising as well, its a 1L with locker etc etc... http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/phpBB2/vi ... p?t=119441
my question is, has anyone seen this round and seen how it goes? i need something thats ok to drive on road....(highway etc) as i need to commute with it. are the 1L models 4speed? and well....being such a small motor, how much power does it have? (im used to driving a non turbo 2.4diesel with 33's and 4 inch lift, so i know slow lol) but is it uncomfotably slow on road? with the 31's?
i've gathered that the 1L has good transfer gears from a few posts i read? but didnt really find anything on power.
anyhoo, and tips and info would be much appreciated, thanks all.

help buying a zook, 1L?
if you where to buy a one litre you would want a cheapie so that you can drop a 1.6 and 5 speed in , even the 1.3s are a bit lacking on the highway. My old 81 model was alright down the highway with 1.3 and 5 speed (normally 1l 4sp) but just like my 97 model i am condsidering a bigger motor to make things more comfortable.

IMHO don't buy a 1.0. They are quite different mechanically to a 1.3, so a 1.3/1.6 conversion is more trouble than it's worth.
The best years of Sierra to buy are 1988 - 1996, the 1.3 widetrack model.
A 1.0 will be at least 23 years old, there is no newer source for motors (last made in 1984) and that's the same for driveshafts, axles, diffs, gearbox.
Also, 1.0's don't have boosted brakes, tachometers, etc etc.
With 4.88's in the diffs ia 1.0 will be spinning about 5000rpm at 100kph.
Just my ideas.

I bought a 1L because it was the only one in the trader cheap for months. It was a pile really, and i ended up spending about 5k on it. If i did it all again i would buy a short wheel base vitara give it 2" body lift and chunky tyres and a cheap front locker 6k tops. This would also mean finding a hard top easier, have air con power steer, 1.6L and an option to have an auto, be more comfertable handle better every day driving to work/school and still returning decent fuel figures. 1 litres are crued realistically compared to a vitara or even a later model sierra for a daily driver, and yes I do DD it coz ive want to get my money back and enjoy the effort i have put into it. But i would not buy one again no matter how cheap.
