what tyres, what lift, what accessories, etc etc?

my 24 valve factory turbo with 5" lift, 35" tyres, front and rear bars, side steps, winch, rear tyre carrier does about 12l/100km but that can vary from around 10 at 80 - 90km/h to over 14 if I exceed 120km.h for extended periods.

City driving with a 1HDT auto on 31's (not light on the old right foot) netted 16L/100km with about 2hrs of 4wding thrown in.

Did a highway trip yesterday but yet to work out the mileage.

Crusier Non-economy

Post by stinger »

I have a HZJ with a/m turbo getting 6-7 km/l or 750kms to the two standard tanks. Bear in mind this is with 35s, 4-6 inchs of lift, winch, bull bar, lightforce 240 spotties, sliders, rear bar, swing away tyre carrier and all my recovery gear, snorkle

that is BAD - in my previous 80 (1HZ, schwitzer turbo) I could get 1100km out of both tanks, with virtually identical setup.

what are your EGT's like? smoke? when was your last injector service?

or do you just drive it on the redline all the time?

Cruiser perfomance

Post by stinger »

Not driven easily, but not driven to read line. EGTs, no idea no EDT gauge, injectors serviced 2 years ago (about 40,000 kms max)

No smoke unless I red line it.

My old standard Troopie got 8-9 km/L, Disco (TD5 auto gets 8-9 km/L) so I am not unhappy with it considering height and tyres.

Stinger,
What Brian said, thats pretty poor economy. I got a 1995 DX with DTS kit, compensater, front mount cooler, 3" exhaust, front & rear bars, wheel carrier,5" lift, 35's, winch, draws, fridge, etc etc, average 13.4L/km in city, down to about 12.6 on freeway, keeping under 110km/h. Easily get 1100km from both tanks on freeway, bout 900-950 in city.

1hdt 345,000 k's

Engine compression perfect - 98% of new settings

Injectors, pump and lines done via highway diesel
Tune up and dyno at brisbane dyno and tuning centre at woolongabba

33 mud 4in lift lights and the usual garb clad on the truck

70 litre main 50 liter sub - i get around 800-850 round town if im gentle.

dyno tune up how ever - without intercooler - 13-14 lbs turbo boost -125 ish HP and 625 f/lb of torque..
So it also doesnt matter if i have a 1 tonne camper trailer behind me on the highway...if i sit around 100 i get the same fuel consumption...

which is around 6.6 k's / litre

mind you @ 100 miles and hour it's fun but thirsty...
45 series ute - 308 -gas -35's- lifted -no flex..But i got air lockers !

94 1hz DTS turbo kit, 375 000km on 33's and 3" lift i never get much better then 16L/100km. has new injectors about 15 000km ageo. EGT's will go over 500 on big hills if i let it. if i back the fuel off a little it still uses about the same and is gutless. it does blow smoke off boost but isnt that an aftermarket turbo thing?

Economies

Post by stinger »

Interesting....

When I first got the vehicle it was gutless, had the injectors done and a tune up. Ended up like someone turned on the turbo and added another gear. Did not change the economy.

I was happy with it until you guys piped up :( But from others it sounds like either you get good economy or bad economy, little middle ground.

To the guys with good economy what boost are you running, I noticed one had an intercoolers as well. Mine has a Beaudesert 3" mandral exhaust. Although an interesting point came up when getting the exhaust done was that it was not a standard aftermarket turbo for a cruiser appeared to be more like one for a nissan. The pipes feeding into the turbo have "Turbo Glide" in the casting. The other point is my injector pump does not have a boost compensator.

Any one recommend a good Turbo mob in Brisbane I can chat to further about this?

The boost on my truck peaks at about 12.5-13psi depending on hill size, gear, wieght, outside temp. etc, but it will bleed back to around 11-11.5 psi and stay there. The motor only has 159,000km on it, the turbo has been on for nearly 40,000km of that.

The Turbo Glide setup uses a Garrett turbo, maybe thats where old mate got the idea that its off a nissan, as nissan used garrett turbos for years in factory applications

my boost controller is set for about 15psi but it will go to about 16.5 on cold nights with enough boot. exhaust temps peak at about 600 post turbo, can push it past that but smart not to. I really really badly need an injector service, the smoke is getting chronic.

Phill I'm surprised you haven't upped the boost to around 1 bar, with the compensator and intercooler the motor should be good for it.

I did have it running 15-16psi in march/april just for something to do. it hauled alot more arse than it does now! But the fuel usage went with it, up around the 15L/100 mark. Couldnt be bothered to go get it tuned to suit, egts went to 520deg. full noise. I knocked it back down cos in 10 days time we are off on a 12-18month "working" holiday  around the country, and will be towing an All terrain Camper behind it, which is goin to weigh in at probably 1200-1300kg fully loaded, so longevity is winning over outright power at the moment.
