GQ for 5K .. what will it buy me

Post by Guy »

I am so over my hilux and wish to rejoin the Nissan faithful after my venture to the dark side. (I very very sadly miss my GU)

I am after a GQ (even one of the RB30 powered ones would do me) I reckon I will have about 5thousand to spend (not inc of reg/transfer fee's etc) but it will need to be in roadworthy condition and have AC.
I would prefer a wagon as I like the extra space and would need a full length roofrack for carrying timber etc that I would have used the ute for.

Am I likey to get anything half reasonable for those kind of $$

There are plenty of cheap GQ's floating around.

depends on km's and diesel/petrol option.

Best bet would be to find a tb42 as they should be cheaper and generally bettery condition for the amount of money your looking for, having said that keep your eyes peeled for a diesel.

A mate last year sold a 91 wagon diesel 330k stock as rock with 31s for 5k...

so they are out there...

I am just after something to bomb about in.
After a 2.4 liter turbo eating (2nd dead turbo in 12 months .. the thing is posessed) hilux diesal .. anything will be OK.
All I want is power steering, AC and reliable ... everything else is a niceity (or can be added later, 2 inch lifts pop up cheap all the time, so does rubber etc, bullbars etc etc)

Fun project would be an RB 30 GQ with straight gas and a turbo.

Hi there after hunting for the last year I came across lots of petrol GQ's for that price and less and also the odd diesel so they do exist....I would be only going the diesel option though and you gotta wonder why so many petrol/duel fuel GQ's are going very cheap ( running costs with fuel). I kept waiting and eventually got a LWB diesel GQ with 2 inch springs, 150 litre tank, snorkel front n rear arb bars with 290K on it for $5700 it needed a couple of little things like front brakes and swivel hub seals......so they are out there you just gotta wait
p.s I have a mate who will be selling his for $6000 soon ( 91 LWB diesel GQ Ti - electric windows 380K on the clock, no oil leaks ) good luck anyway :)

Sounds like a good bit of kit, but I just want a cheapie for now. In a few years I will get another GU.

There is a super clean white GQ "RX" spec near work that looks really nice with a small lift and 33's. Would be perfect for the type of wheeling I want to do .. now I wonder if I can convince them to slee it to me for 5K

Got an 89 GQ LWB TD42 for $4500 about a month ago. After market front seats, ARB front bar, 2" spring and a few other bits and pieces. 440,000 km but I'm happy with it. Body is pretty good for the age, paint not so much (don't care anyway) and for the price I saved over something with less than 300,000 I can afford to rebuild the engine/pump anyway (or just sink it into mods!). Needed rear pads and a seatbelt for road worthy.

You'll probably have to wait a little while to find a diesel but you should be able to find a petrol straight off the bat.

Yep keep your eyes open, if you keep a check on trading post etc they are around, don't be afraid to look for the maverick as well, I just picked up a 91 LWB with 205000kms for $4800. Then went to town with mods from BBM, locker, 6" lift, rock hoppers 35" Coopers etc and the best thing is that with a cheaper cars the dints only add bragging rights rather than grief from the wife!!! Good luck

A mate at work just bought an immaculate black 1990 GQ wagon with 240k's. Carby petrol on gas with water bleed system fitted. Fairly new looking Terrain Tamer 3 or 4" lift.

All he's had to do is replace clutch slave and master cylinders, weld up a split fuel tank and replace a busted upper trailing arm, full grease and oil change and re-pack wheel bearings for good measure. Cost him $4500, owes him $5000 now.

Unfortunately this thing will never leave the bitumen whilst in his ownership.
