failure rate of warn winches with bigger motors

Post by TRobbo »

heaps of people are now running modded warn winches and in particular have uprated the hp of the electric motor.

My highmount is still stock and is very reliable.

For anyone that has upped the hp, has the extra hp lead to an increase in failure of other components?

Hey Robbo..

We run 24v through a single 6hp and so far the only thing we've done is bust winch motors!

This winch has done the 1st Engel, the OBC, The cliffhanger, ATECO and Pirahna.

thanks Ruffy. Anyone broken brake shafts or stripped gears? What do you think the cause was?

I've been running a 7.8hp 24v for the past 3 years with no dramas. I also flick the opposite way to stop it over spooling. I won't be doing that with 2 x 7.8's though!

I've seen brake shafts break....and heard of one bottom housing shattering..!! (replaced by Ateco)
In both cases the motor was upgraded and certainly contributed to the breakage.

Robbo,

If you just run 12V through a 6hp warn motor (or similar) you will not have any issues with brake shafts etc.

If you start running 24V, and you reverse the winch direction without lag, you will break shafts. (i.e winch out and then immediately winch in.....it is best to allow a few seconds to allow the winch to run-on before you change directions.

Jason

Are the older high mounts stronger than the new ones.

Winch breakages

Post by Smithy jnr »

I supply the upgraded brake shafts for those that do break their original Warn shafts. The Warn brake shafts generally seem to give up due to allowing slack in the cable when winching, then the vehicle slips back & shock loads the cable which transfers the load to the brake shaft. With just the one motor being upgraded to an XP motor there shouldn't be any problems.

Yeaj if you don't know how to winch correctly and shock load the winch, it won't matter wht you do it will break!
