I know its not a 4wd, but I thought I would ask it here anyhow.

Yesterday, I helped out some friends of ours by hiring a trailer and collecting for them an EF Ford Falcon. It has sat "for a while" how long, unknown. It is EFI.

I bought them a new battery as well, and when we got to their place, tried to start it to drive it off the trailer- we winched it on, no luck. Not sure if any fuel that is in the tank has gone stale. Just about cranked the battery flat trying to start it. Ended up managing to get it to fire with Aerostart, but it wont run. We put more fuel into the tank, but by then, the battery was pretty much flat. The battery was being charged up last night.

We managed to get the vehicle off the trailer by winching it off, and up into the driveway.

So, the question is, can you manually pump the fuel up in one of these things? Is there anywhay of manually feeding fuel into the motor to get it to run? Have they got an electric fuel pump (no sound of one operating) and where is the fuel filter in them.

Any other ideas?

dodgy, but get a squirter bottle, fill with fuel, and squirt using spray setting down the throttle body with the butterfly slightly open.

EXTREMLY DODGY :shock: . do not spray fuel through a spray bottle into your maf/throttle body.

It is you fuel pump, Lift the carpet in the rear (boot) and on the top of the wheel well there it is, You have to undo a bandclamp, then unscrew the black plastic. Clamp off the fuel lines though or you'll have fuel running out all over your boot. There is also a small 2 or 3 pin plug that only go's in one way. Your level sender and pump is an "all in one unit" and there is a little "filter" on the suction pipe
One from the wreckers is about 15bucks, I don't know about new. No need to bleed it up, just crank it a couple of times.
My ex girlfriends EB had the same problem.

A quick fix to test, When hers was on it's way out, she was lifting the carpet and gently tapping the top of the pump with a plastic hairbrush. It seemed to work for her for about a week, then it died completly.

we have had a couple of cars at work do the same thing, the car sits and the fuel goes stale, the stale fuel then corrodes the in-tank pump and seizes it.

if the fuel is stale you will notice it smells really bad.

drain all the fuel out and fill with clean fuel, and replace the fuel pump.

Just been through the same thing, bought a vp bombadore that had been sitting a yaer, new fuel pump and started first go.

Thanks guys, yep problem solvered. Drained the crappy fuel out of it, removed intank fuel pump, knackered, 2nd hand one out of a tank at the wreckers, so I knew it hadnt sat dry on the shelf for a while. Put it all back together, new fuel, and away it went.

2 observations, as its the first time I have worked on a Fix Or Repair Daily. What a crappy way to hold the sender/pump unit into the tank, big poly nut that easily siezes on, then a huge worm drive hoseclamp over the top of it as an additional safety, which is impossible to get to to undo.

So, the next question is, where can you get the codes for the factory stereo in the vehicle. It is flashing up ERR on the display. I assume this is because of the stuffed battery.

I did say DODGY...., was made to do that when I worked in a wreckers that imported jap engines. Had to start em and run em using the fuel in the squirter bottle

for the radio ring a ford dealer with your vin number and they should be able look it up for you. they may ask for proof of ownership or id

sometimes the code is the last 3 or 4 didgits of the vin number?

just about all new cars use the big poly nut to hold the senders in and yeah they can be a biatch to get un done sometimes
