4spd box losing reverse

Post by Flange Raider »

I've got an 81 RR, with the standard 4spd box.

over the weekend it started losing reverse.. :bad-words:
would go into where reverse 'was' and have no gear. :bad-words:
would go into where reverse 'was' and get stuck. :bad-words:
now I can only get it after 15 or so trys, usually in low range. :bad-words:

I didn't hit anything.. it hadn't been crunching into gear or hard to get into reverse before.. :bad-words:

Am I farked??

Pull the gear lever (relative easy job - 3 shoulder screws in retainer plate) and you might be able to see if there is a problem with selector at that end.

Also there should be a flexible washer/ring between the retainer plate and the ball on the gear lever - if it is missing/flogged out you will have play in the gear lever which might contribute to your problem.

Drop the oil and remove cover (4 screws) on lower left side of gear case, just in front of gearbox mount. This will allow you to see the gears and selector arm for reverse. The reverse selector arm pivots on the screw that is just above this cover.

Hope that helps.

Remove the shifter and top cover and check the roll pin that holds the reverse /4th gear selector. The pin sheared on my 81'4sp and one night i had to drive 100 meters down the footpath just so i could get going forward again ! If 4th gear is a bit sloppy then this sounds like the problem, its an easy fix but be careful not to drop the old and new pins into the box otherwise you will have to drain the oil and hope that it comes out.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

make sure that you havent broken a gearbox mount causing the gearbot to lay to one side and allow the lever to hit the side of the hole in the floorpan

:) -Flange Raiders Mrs-

Hi boys, can anyone suggest what the clunking noise in my Rangie could be?
I would like to get it on the road instead of giving it to Flange Raider.

thanks all!!

especially you Grimace..... NOT :finger: :D

seriously though, it was Bush65 who helped me out..

I did everything (serious) listed.. and it turned out to be the selector arm for reverse... was loose and obviously not doing what it was supposed to..

a nice little suprice for me while I was in there was a mashed up spring..... lovely..

anyway, fixed up and some new oil now.. sweet.

thanks again all.
