How often do you redo front diff axel seals??

Post by Surfin Alec »

I replaced my CV's, axel seals and all hub gaskets about 12 months ago and now have to do them again as the grease had turned to goop and diff oil is also grey goop. I run a air locker in the front and go 4wding about once a month. Is this reasonable to be an annual job? I used genuine axel seals too.
I hate redoing the front diff when the seals go, its basically back to housing and start again and what a blooody mess!!

alot of people might disagree, but after any submerging in water i recon it is best to redo them for safety. with felt seals on the knuckle it just doesnt hold enough water out of the CV.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

Inner axle seals I'll do when ever I have the front end apart.
Otherwise I only do them as needed.
All the other seals I realy only do them when I replace wheel bearings. If the felts are starting to look crappy then I replace them to.
I just put another new housing under the front of mine and it got all new bearings and seals write threw it.

Also as for the mess goes, most people go way over the top with greese in the knucle.

You only need to pack each bearing and each CV. Then the inside of the knuckle really only needs a thin smear over it to help prevent surface rust on the inside.

I must be one of this over doing people as I tend to stuff the whole knuckle about 2/3 full of grease. The grey molydilithium stuff??
Just what I was shown and have stuck to it. Must be why I get covered from head to toe in the stuff when re-doing the front diff.

Christ I better start doing mine every second weekend then...
Check your diff oils after every trip you have a submersion and re-do the seals every time you replace your wheel bearings. Noisy wheel bearings will tell you things need replacing and re-greasing.

yeah i think it came out wrong. when it looks like it needs it, which is normally after a wet trip at glasshouse. and that is more of a check over too.

Also on toyo shit if it gets wheel'd a fair bit i'd be doin the bronze looking bush inside the spindle (inside peice that your wheel bearing runs on) as i done mine but not this one part and still leak my way of thinking longside axle leaks first this part worn will allow axle to move up and down not much but enough to let oil past the inner axle seal no matter how new the felts are it'll still leak.
Also a generous amount of grease will help (not prevent) keep water out done a Pootrol swivel hub rebuild at work other day and there was very limited grease and a fair amount of rust
plenty of parts on the bench
