We are going to put gas on our 4.5 100 series, it is our main family truck but we want to use it for touring, i know that the scuba tanks would give us more range but do they interfere much with ground clearance & if so would a slight lift fix that ? Just checkin our options. Cheers Sean
the scuba tanks hang down about an inch lower than the sills, but mine have 2mm steel bash plates over them - a friend with the same setup has dropped the entire vehicle weight on his tanks, and had no problem at all except some scrapes to the bash plates... which are easily replacable.
Belly tanks do not give you more range on LPG, as they are only 36L usable each (72L total), the range comes from also having the 50L sub tank still in place.
The tanks that usually replace the sub tank are approx 90L usable, so they actually give more range on LPG, but less overall range, and the added cost of moving the spare wheel.
So 145L of petrol + 72L LPG (217L) is more than 95L petrol + 90L LPG (185L)... which realistically is not that much!
BUT - if you have belly tanks, you can also get a long range sub tank @ 175L, + 95L main, + 72L LPG = 342L... which is plenty more range if you really need it!
I lifted mine 3" and it is excellent, but chews the fuel now with the lift, barwork, 33" tyres and at trouing weight...
Just be aware - A lift will make the side tanks less vulnerable, but at a cost.
BTW - I got the injected LPG which is good. What are you getting installed?

the positive side to scooba tanks is no spare out the back, and cheaper than other options but the down side is range on lpg...you fit LPG to use it and save money, so 70 something litres, 65 usable will give you 300kms....between fills but the tank down back is 120/ 100 usable, with a range of 550kms and you loose a underslung spare and 45 litre petrol sub to be left with 95 main...
Also, scuba weight is inbetween axles as opposed to rear tank behind, so larger rear springs to hold it all up.

Yeah good point, i just went out to the shed and the yellow limit for my diving gear is 250 bar (3675psi). I'm looking into fitting lpg on my truck, I've got 2 tanks one is out of date and is steel, while the other is only 1 year old and made out of stainless. Local gas guy said he won't install stainless because he reckons they crack?? It's made to Aus standard tho??

I have a Falcon S/W taxi tank in my Surf.
I thought these were called Scuba when it comes to LPG tanks;
They have 62L actual capacity.
As for the S/S talk, I know that testers are not willing to re-stamp them when the date expires. If you have a tank in date (stamped year is expiry date), you can use it, however, LPG installers are not willing to do a new certification when there is less than 2 years remaining as a general guide.
Expired S/S LPG tanks make excellent petrol or air tanks.

I've got the impco venturi system with 120l tank where the spare was. i get 400k out of it (also got the 50l sub tank) doesn't seem to make much difference weather the are hyway k's or town. The gas tank does hang down a bit more than the spare did so if clearance is critical to u it could be an issue. I'm a bit dissappointed with loosing the clearance but we all know what these things cost to run so it was a worthwhile sacrafice as far as i'm concerned As far as having the spare on the back goes, it is a bit of a pain in the arse if you're iand and out of there heaps but I reckon it would be better than crawling through mud to get the spare if you had to...............Ok, so, to sum up(after all that) I reckon gas is well worth it, but i'd go for the biggest tank you can coz filling up all the time is a pain todinos4x4 wrote:I have the old venturi system on mine with a 90 litre usable tank i get around 370ks around town.
