Subaru Leone 4WD Question

This is a question for the Subie gurus,

I have a mate with a Subaru Leone 4WD, and he wants to
get a set of rims to take it offroad. Which types of rims fit
Leone 4WDs? and which type of rims are best for clearance?

I've seen smallish (maybe 14") sunrasias on subaru Brumbys before
do these fit on the leone?? What type of tyres can you fit on them?

I assume you mean the L-series (square) wagon. AFAIK the same rims fit them as the MY-series wagon (previous model). Speedie and sunraysia rims (13" or 14" for MY or L series subaru) fit, as well as peugeot 4 stud rims (but don't buy the rims that take metric tyres - you won't be able to buy off-road tyres).

Yeah that's the one, it is an L series sedan.
So I can get L, MY series or Peugot rims?
How can I tell if the Peugot rims are metric or not?

What tyres are good? Just hilux stockers,
or do you need a special sized tyre to fit in the guard.
It runs standard height suspension.

get a 2inch lift kit as you will have trouble fitting bigger tires without. The lift kit improves the approach, departure and ramp over. If you get a quality kit, they come with wind up strut tops that also increase the diff clearance.

Yeah thats what I told him,

he's considering it, but at the moment its just his
daily driver/thrash thing. It's got a WRX motor
with intercooler, boost, an STi dog-box and a big clutch!
All in a bog-standard leone ST I think it is (with the factory body kit).
And those awesome "square" rims.

He went and did some beach work on the weekend and realised
he does not quite have the clearance. He saw a few other subies
with these rims on and asked me to inquire for him (no PC).

Can he fit the 13"s without a lift? It's OK if they rub a little bit.

13"s are the standard size, I think he would want 14" which would require a fair bit of cutting on the L series to fit. The bigger the tire, the better as the small tires bog in to quickly on the soft sand.

and the subaru club of qld has lots of info on their site www.subaclub.com i think

o and for any one who thinks that subarus are not good of road heres a pic for you of an icelandic one

I've done a few of these tyre/wheel packages.... Go for the Speedy 14" rims and either a 185 or 195R14 tyre in an all terrain tread. Bridgestone make a few and there are plenty of retreaders that do also... just make sure your up to date on your life insurance policy if you head towards the latter

Yep there 4 stud, there were off an 82 subi wagon

They still have tyres on, mostly worn though 195/65's, and just mesured rim width it's 6".

you need to get the 14x6" 140mm 4 stud pattern in the speedy wheels

which as earlier mentioned is the same as the peugot's

also look out for groovy looking peugot alloy wheels

you will pay upwards of $150 a wheel for the scorpion rims, but they are factory offset. Still a 14x6 though

look at the $50 odd mark for the speedies (desert rat they are listed as)

as far as tyre sizes, if they are standard springs, 195/60's is going to be about the biggest without cutting guards..... if you want to cut some guards and/or put 2" or 3" lift kits in (body lift kits for subies, which essentially drops drivetrain down from body, including engine x-member) then the possibilties are endless!! Also very easy to get ~40mm lift springs to fit with ease. 27x8.5 BFG AT is a popular tyre with a 2" body lift

but yeah, if he isn;t going along that path, just cut a bit of front guard, and squeeze under some 195/65's or similar. also note that speedie rims are offset about 40mm, so will pick up outside of guard easier

How can I tell if the Peugot rims are metric or not?

Peugeot made some rims that are completely metric (i.e. metric diameter - not 13" 14" etc - like 325mm, 350mm). There are only about 2 different makes of (road) tyres you can buy for them. If they are fitted with tyres it will be obvious because they will be something like a 185x65x325 as opposed to a 185x65 R 13.

hahah!! nah there were never air lockers for them. There are a handful of detroit lockers for them in the country, but goodluck getting a hold of one of these!! plenty of LSD's, and a load of cig specials!!

BTW 1981 MY82, 2" lift kit, Weber 32/36 DGV carbie, shaved heads (9.4 vs 8.7 comp ratio), twin exhaust pipes to behind the gearbox, Datsun 180 B SSS LSD rear diff and driveshafts (no more torn boots ), 175/75 Avon Mud/snow tyres.

Beware with the peugeot wheels......some had a square cut centre making wheel balancing extremely difficult, i ran a couple or early 80's wagons with 2 inch body lift, 14's and welded centres. Actually amazing capabilities for the design of the vehicle. Limited by distributor placement ofcourse!

The sunraysia-style rims that Subaru used from the factory are different on the L-series to the MY-series.
The rims from an MY-series won't fit on the rear of the L-series due to the larger brake setup.

Desert Rat rims by Speedy Wheels and the Scorpion Offroad rims both probably have a large enough offset to suit either - I havn't had the chance to compare them side by side.
