The only thing a timing belt will change is camshaft timing. the pump is gear driven. Why not find a correct size garret bb to suit your job?

I guess I didnt really think about what drives the fuel pump I am still getting my head around diesel engines, (first one ive owned)
Andy do you think a worn timing belt would affect cam timing? I was trying to figure this out today.
I think if there was .5 mm worn of each side of the teeth on timing belt that means camshaft pulley would be lagging by 1 mm, this would equate to over 1-1.5 degrees on pulleys the same diameter as camshaft.
Would changing cam timing by this amount have any noticeable effect?
After driving 30kms to work and back today I still think it is running better than before.
BTW bb Garret turbo sounds great! all comes down to $$$. want to maximize performance from stock turbo first, upgrade exhaust and fit air-water intercooler and tune pump first.

Yes worn or stretched belts can cause problems you described.
To answer another question asked about belts, the L range of toyota engines have the belt drive both pump and camshaft.

Yeah built manifold my self. Did have a tuned lenght manifold I built but ditched it due to not flowing as good as it could. Ill see if I can find some old pics of it.

This was an issue with the early 1HDT injector pumps, and there is a do-up kit made by Toyota to overcome these issues. They called it the "warranty wagon" early in its release as most of them came in for replacement parts and injector pump overhaul. You can tell whether the pump has had the mod made by the colour of the injector pipe nuts on the pump, silver and they are original, black and it has been rectified. The early ones also got bigger fuel pipes from the pump to the injector as a warranty replacement.

That warranty you are talking about was to fix a midrange surge problem. Toyota tried lots of things to fix it. Out of warranty it is a very expensive fix to do.

Andrew, what do you think about turbo jackets? (or whatever they are called)
Anything that keeps the heat in, will increase speed of gas through turbo, ceramic coating is the best option, lag the dump pipe too...fit the muffler as far back as possible...yada yada
Its important to weigh up what you want.....i wouldnt bag the turbo because tyu will fill it up with mud

Thats the Plan...... Jet Hot Coatings...., is also getting a turbine housing thermal cover too....
