how do wheelspacers work e.g what size are they usually, do you have to extend your wheel lugs and where do you source these parts, what cost would this be altogether (ballpark)?, cheers...

it all depends on their size with the 1" and under they just space out on the original lugs.

i have 3" spacers that bolt onto the original lugs, then have another set of lugs sticking out rotated to the middle orirntation.

So you bolt the spacer to the hub, then the wheel to the spacer.

they are quite dear... i think mine cost me around 600 for 4....

Most the 3/4 and 1" from the states bolt onto your original studs and have the extra studs to bolt the wheel on just like the 2-3" ones.

Don't mean to thread jack here but.... why does what is essentially a piece of machined metal (aluminium more than likely) with some studs cost so much in Aus when they start at $$79 usd a PAIR in the US for 1" and go up to $$119 usd a PAIR for 3".

One Aus company I looked at starts at $$170 aus for ONE 1.5" spacer. ONE!!!!!

So what do you do for a living ??

Have you ever made them or seen the quality of the ones from the USA ?

Have you got any idea about liability and insurance?

Lets say it is for a Toyota so you have 6 wheel studs straight up that is about $30 then you have the material lets say we make it out of 4140 and cut a slice from a 6" bar, there goes another $20 - $40 depending on how much you buy and what day of the week. Lets say $30. So we are at $60 for material. Now we need to machine it, drill it, clean it, press in the studs, market it, stock it , insure it and then deal with a customer who wants it. All this takes what we call time. Lets say it takes 1 hr per spacer to do all this @ $88 an hour we are know looking at $148 per spacer and we haven't made any profit, covered insurance and marketing and we are doing pretty well to find someone to machine it at $88 an hour anyway.

So cost is about $148 ea on a good day. You say they advertise them for $170 .. damn they must want to pay rent, overheads, and feed their families.

Maybe one day when we have 300 000 million people then OZ Business will be able to sell things for the same price as the USA. Or better still we can drop our quality and by their crap.

Better still if you think 4WD shops are making so much off them then why don’t you make them for the OZ market and retire on the profit, then the 1st time a stud brakes or some monkey doesn’t do them up correctly, or some engineer with a different opinion on design takes a disliking to your product you can spend all your hard earned $$$ in court.
