Yet another carbie problem
hi all, i have a 1991 1.3 sierra . I have searched and tried different things on my carbie.
Problems:
* Down hills backfires
* Low revs no power(like its cold)
* Stalls wen u stop at lights
* I cant drive in lowrange up rocks cos no low down power
* Makes a rough idol when stopped or when clutch in, then stalls
Solutions:
* New fuel filter
* Swapped the leads so it pops
* Tried hand over the intake
And still no luck. Please Help!

Father has almost exact same problem few years back. He pulled the carby off, and emptied the float bowl out, and the needle jet was full of gungy stuff. Was fine after that. He did a carby rebuild, adn replaced the fuel filter about a month later to try and prevent it happening again; so far so good.
I had similar though not so bad, was a missing vacum line on the intake manifold. Replaced it and its good too.
BTW, mine has always backfired down hills when any speed is picked up (30km/h or more roughly); I understand they just do that...

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.

It dosent do any good and its Illegal, $240 noise polution or undue noise as they call it
yeah it might be fun if your over taking a friend and watch him jump, but seriously.
It only does damage, last thing you want is to do a nice loud key bang and you bend one of your exhaust valves then before you nkow it your piston slams into it 20 times and does more damage,
Making a car back fire is different to it poping when under compression
Buy some fire crackers its cheaper!

check your vacuum hoses....simple thing to miss and makes a hell of a difference. I suffered similar things about six months after a carby rebuild....one hose had slipped off and was hard to see when looking from the side so get on top and have a good look....you never know

Check your timing and vacuum lines.
Check the vacuum advance hose from the manifold to the dizzy. A leak in this hose will cause the sort of problems you are having.
I have seen sierras timing set all over the place and then idle speed adjusted to make it "work"

Mine was having this problem earlier this week/month. Turned out after I did the body lift, one of the vacuum lines running from the airbox to the manifold split. Replaced it and it was still running a bit rough, but it was idling. Pulled the dizzy cap off and #3 was corroded to crap, replaced that and it was sweet. Gave it a quick hit with the timing light to make sure all was good and it's never run this well.
The easiest way to check if any vacuum lines are leaking is to start the car with the bonnet open, and spray a nice atomising aerosol in there like WD40, something that wont damage the engine if it inhales it. Once the mist is in the engine bay you should be able to see if it's sucking in or blowing out anywhere. Bear in mind the engine fan will disburse the mist quickly, so dont confuse that with a massive leak somewhere
Is the engine stalling only when you put your foot on the clutch? If so this might be a problem with your thrust bearing being siezed.
