2.5TDI Towing Woes

Post by burtbunch »

Gday all,

Got a new Camper that would weigh close to 1000KGs loaded up. The old girl pulls it quite well on the flat but firsy decent grade has it in fourth and struggling to hold 70kph! Fuel consumption went out the window too! 100k's from 1/4 tank! Am I expecting too much from this little engine? What Can I do to improve things.? My running Gear is all standard. I was thinking of upping the boost, What is the safest level? Fitting a couple of hi-clones soon too, Does anyone know of any problems with these? The engine has recently had new injectors/pump/timing kit.

Any suggestions?

Burty

1000kg isnt exactly a box trailer, dropping to 4th isnt that bad.

what ratios are you running?

Wouldn't have a clue as to ratios. Factory standard? does that help?

I agree. Think about what hi-clones (claim to) do, and think about what your turbo does.

Do you really think hi-clones will make a difference to the air coming out of your turbo?

The hi clone goes in before the turbo and after the air filter. I have been told to put two in and some even put six in! Supposed to get the air spinning faster before it gets ti intercooler/turbo. Anyway there is a moneyback guarantee so can't hurt to try?

Like to talk to someone who has them installed.

the turbo is "sucking" the air in. its not going to make a difference to the air after the turbo and certainly not in the intercooler anywhere.

the 2.5TDI ain't no rocket ship to start with, I'm thinking along the lines of a single stage boost controller for mine, to get that little bit more out of it from time to time. (or upgrade to a 2.8TD)

But for the moment I'll just stick to crawling up slopes

Hey guy's. My NG 2.5TDI isn't a rocket ship either, but I just spent a bit of money on mine to upgrade the fuel pump and increase the turbo boost (was on 8- almost non existant- now its on 12psi) and fit a 2.5 inch exhaust. I now have 60kw at the wheels and 591nm of torque (prior to this, my car was stock standard except for safari snorkel and suspension). I regularly get 750-800+ per tank city driving, country driving, who knows what it would get?? Maybe something like that would be an option for you for your camper trailer? I also had some hiclones in my old car, but I didn't really notice much difference, but as you mentioned before, it is a money back guarentee so why not?

I was told by the person who tuned my car to fit a 2.5 inch exhaust so when I took the car in (before work began), it was already fitted with 2.5 inch exhaust, not standard. With this in mind, my power figures were 45kw at the wheels, and the torque was somwhere in the high 300's I think. I am not sure how much difference the 2.5 exhaust would have made to the 45kw. This car is my daily driver so i am very conscious about fuel economy. I was concerned that by boosting the power and performance of my car :?: , I would reduce my fuel economy (which would have been money WASTED in my opinion), but much to my happiness :D , my fuel range has increased by 50-100km per tank, as well as performance!

If that figure is correct, I will sell my 2.8TD for a 2.5

Mine only made 270nm on the dyno. :?
