Freewheeling hub keeps popping out of drive.

Post by cruiserkid »

Ok heres my problem.
I have a GQ shorty and everytime I put it in 4wd and put load on it the front right hub makes a very loud bang then the wheel stops turning but you can still here the diff driving.
The hub will then clunk and start driving again.
I have replaced the hubs etc and it just keeps destroying hubs.
I very rarely use my air locker so it is not that that is doing it.
The conclusion that I have come up with is that I have a bent housing.
A while ago the front right wheel hit the side of the bank and bent the wheel back so far that it smashed the steering stopper into the swivel housing.
I am thinking that might be the problem or a bent axle?.
Has any one had this problem before or know of a solution?.

are your hubs auto or manual freewheeling hubs? Auto's have a tendency to blow up due to the small cam they use for auto engage. Mate Dave had the same problem, even if he locked them into 4WD using the spanner it would make a loud bang like u described, the wheel would stop turning then go again.

his solution was to go Manual Freewheeling hubs, solved the problem

there is a steel ring that press's into the hub in front of the wheel bearing this locates the dog gear if you leave this ring out the free wheeling hub will still ingage but will slip under load

My GQ had a similar problem but the other way. They would engage 4wd(just one side) on their own while in 2wd. I tossed the auto hub and went the manual hub. All is good.
