rust proofing for beach

im going ona fraser trip next weekend and i just got my car and im wanting to do a bit of temporary rustfroofing before i go. ive used that tectril stuff before on my last car just before i went to the beach and because its tacky, all the sand stuck to it and when i tried to wash it off some was still stuck .

so is there anything i can put on there that wont be tacky and can be washed off when i get back. i was thinking of fish oil. i was thinking it is like oil or wd40 sort of thing that wont go hard and sticky and can be hosed off.

has anyone used it before or can anyone recomend something to use?

salt assalt fron tjm.
ive found the sand sticks to oils too and you need alot of degreaser n water to get it off. wich is a pain now with water restrictions and having to use car lovers

lanotec lanolin, its a water repelant type thing, can get it from nubco, and i suspect supercheap and repco would have it also

Best bet on your way up to fraser swing off the hiway near mobyvics some where and give it a good dose of mud ,

Lanolin is a byproduct of the wool cleansing process.

You could always do what a bloke did for the fishing comp about 15 years ago, covered his 4wd in Vasoline. But of a bugger to get off, but it would have had no problems "slipping" through the crowds.

I give the car a good wash and polish and give the underneath a good clean as well.
After its dry I spray lanox ( a mixture of inox and lanoline) underneath, wheel arches, the wheels, chassis, suspension etc. Avoid the exhaust and the brakes.
I use silicone spray on the rubbers of the windows, plastic trim and black paint of the bull bar.

The kicker here is you do it twice, before you go and when you come back.

I get to fraser twice a year and do twantin, double island point and rainbow 2 to 3 times a yr.
Yes its labour intensive but its been working so far.
It really depends on how long you want to keep your 4x4.

im going to supercheap so ill ask them about this lanolin product. can i spray it anywhere under the car ie. bushes, seals, electrics?

there was one 4wd monthly dvd where the guy put some stuff on milo before he went to the beach but i cant remember what it was.

i just used tectyl, its good shit but as you said it takes a fair time to set hard (or hardish) so you are sort of out of luck with this option. my old man did his cruiser in tectyl probably 10 years back, its done fraser island 3 times, as well as numerous other beach work and fishing trips and doesnt have a spot of rust in it.

Invented by an guy who works in Rocklea, he asked the government to help him out to try and keep it australian they said to him nar can't help with cash as there's no money in it for us.

So he managed to build up 1 million to get a plant and get all the patents etc and was able to own it 100% and keep it 100% Australian.

They had a show about lanolin the oil and lanotec is the company name, on ABC years back just after he started up a plant for making it in rocklea QLD, this was back in 2000.

The name lanolin is part from the name given to the waste wool, like a shearer nick name, and part oil, I can't remember exactly the names but it's something like that.

He is the only one allowed to make lanolin, anyway, it's partly made from the oil on waste wool, so this left over oil is then processed and made useable, so it's 100% natural and is 100% better than any man made oil or anything else that can be made up to do the same job, plus in the show before you got all these prodtucts using it, that you could use it for heaps of different things, as it lasts longer than WD-40 but has the same sort of uses as WD-40 plus other stuff.

by the end of the ABC show about the guy, they were saying your made a golden egg, and his reply was yeah but what's got me is how no one never thought to filter the oil from used wool etc seeing as it simply got chucked away for about 100+ years before he decided to take a look into it.

I think he's an ex-shearer or something, because he knew about the waste wool etc years before he tried getting the oil out of it.

If your ever able to see the show watch it as it a pretty good show, it'd be a landline show, they spent a good 1/2 hour just on lanotec.

yeah lanolin is the go easy and works good brand is PERTEC or PIRTEC i think comes in spray cans and a 1 litre contaniner aswell. Pertec have a few shops around.

unless your a very regular beach driver then IMO it wouldnt be worth the money. from what i hear they are a hit and miss option unless your spending big bucks on them. thats not to say that cheaper versions wont do the job, just that you really should do the research before spendning money on something that may or may not work...

You can buy lanotec from Bunnings - great stuff - use it on outdoor timber and the stuff will last for ages - just smells like a sheep for the first few days!!

I think the couplertec one would be the betta one.

They are $640 DIY that has 1 unit and 2 pads the pads goto opsite corners of the 4wd, if you want top of the line option then you get a 2 unit and 4 pads.

At the shows you get installed price for DIY price not bad I thought.

I'll be doing this soon or next year.

if you dont mind the smell 60/40 mix of diesel &clean engine oil, 1/2 way up spray it under & up to the door handles,it will travle into every crack & gap while you drive,& acar wash later & its gone/ told to me by pro fisherman who are on the beach all day every day, real cheap,put it on with an old windex bottle

Do you mean spray it on the outside of the car or inside the panels?

I have a counteract system and use penetrol on the chassis and in doors, guards, bonnet etc and havnt had a problem yet lanolin is also good and will dry enough that sand wont stick in about a day but it washes off and when your driving up the beach i found the wet sand rips it off pretty quick. I had a GQ for four years and cracked the gutter off the body first trip i did, I put penetrol on that once and then lanolin every time i went to the beach, never even got surface rust on it. I also had a counteract system on that truck, cant say they do any good, but they definatly dont do any harm!
P.S My truck spends at least a month a year on the beach

By the way if you arent going to flood it with freshwater a couple of times when you get home there's not much point putting anything on it.
