Going from the looks of those welds I'd say they used an Adobe welder v8.0 to join the chasiss together.
A good tool in the right hands but can be difficult to use and Ive heard anecdotally that they have problems passing engineers due to lack of tensile strength in the real world.

Of course, anything's possible.

One possible problem though is that generally, once you cut a car in 1/2, the car has to meet 2007 ADR's, but there might be some way around it because of the commercial vehicle thing. Lengthly discussions with an engineer would be required.

However, at the end of the project all you would be left with was a weak, heavy and expensive dual cab hilux, effectively.

sorry steve but i think youve gone out on a limb again. any axtra weight ( 2 doors and a piddly bit of body, couldn't be more than 200kg) would be offset by improved capability. plus it would ride like a dream being so long & ''weak''. i was thinking about this before, and i think i will be chasing it up wich means talking to an engineer because i will not be doing it if its not leagal and have a seating capacity of 4. (or6 with a third row ;) )

No worries mate, it's fun out here ;)

Apparently, I hate sierras for saying things like this  but here goes.

Weight - the weight is not as much in the conversion as how much you can put in it once stretched. a Sierra with four proper seats with adults in them + the stretch will be over GVM before any load is added. Many SWB sierras are already over GVM packed for a trip, before you more than double the load area.

The examples of heavily stretched sierras I have seen built most in the US have been SPOA and run hiluxor Dana diffs, like the one posted here. As such, they end up as long, wide and high as a Hilux, just eleventy billion times more work. I know what i'd rather drive. Once set up like this, you'll need more power, more lift for the belly clearance etctcetc. My vote - just start with a SPOA dual cab to start with. (or an 85 fourrunner for $4K (if you want an open 4 seater)

To me, it comes back to people not respecting what sierras are good at. Even LWB sierra is a barge compared to a SWB car. Add another 10" of wheelbase and it will just suck.

Mr Green- one element of weight with this conversion is that unless you replate with a higher GVM (which takes a lot of convincing for an engineer to approve) you are normally only allowed a 30% increase in dry weight on a cert. for a sierra, that's 150kg. this will get swallowed up pretty quickly. Taking into account the limits to suspension and body lift permitted by the NCOP, I can't see it being viable, but maybe that's just me being negative.

I guess this is one of those arguments that separates the enthusiasts from the realists. An enthusiast will always think a sierra will be better than any other car regardless, because its a sierra, while a realist will say there's no point building that because you can easily buy something better.

I suppose I'm just a realist, and I can't see a stretched Sierra being better than a heap of other readily available vehicles, even before you take into account the $$ an labour to build it.

There is some good points in there Ive had both swb and lwb. The swb was way more manuverable but the stability of the lwb makes up for the extra back and fill.
My lwb now has a gvm of 1350kg on the rego.
I see what your saying about why not just buy a stock vehicle that already has the specs you want but its a zook thing. I feel in love with zooks with my first swb. But when I needed more room for the family I got a lwb. Then I wanted extra height for break over angle width to stable it out and strenght cause changing a cv while the family waits would suck I went toy diffs with lenghtend wb. Sure a lux or similar would have more room and comfort but its not a zook :finger: so now I still have alot of the benifits of a zook, one of them being talking crap with you guys :D

I agree Nik, My Sierra will also end up over WB and well over width, so maybe the limits of what I consider a suzuki are totally arbitrary, but if you cut the chassis and shove 2 feet in there (or more) to run another whole door- well that's to me where it becomes diminishing returns.

the thing is, as a long distance/ family car, sierras are cramped anyway because of their width.

I seriously think most of the guys who have built these "giant" sierras are doing it because they can, not because they think it will realistically be better (than say a d/C hilux) then that's cool, so long as when it's done you're no too fussed how it works.

I know my car will work better for my purposes when I'm finished than a hilux, even though it will be as wide and maybe as long (as a 4runner) not sure the same could be said for a "giant" sierra.

spot on NIK. i have had a swb and made it less practical by turning it into a tray back. then i saw the light and bought a lux. and i thought it was just the best. it did everything better than the zook( well almost everything) and with a 6x8 tray a/c p/s cd bla bla bla life could not be better, then i saw another modded zook and put me back to were i started. i have done a few hours worth of thinking measuringect and so far have come to the conclusion that the best way to attack it will be with a hard top with the wheel arch moved back and rear doors cut into it(kinda troopy style) and bolted to a lwb chassis. i am going to get the tape measure back out in the next few days to seperate the facts from fairytales, but i;m thinking with the swb on the lwb chassis and the coil setup i'm going to use there will be bugger all chassis extension and what is there will be extended to the end of the chassis (not in the middle like the mockup) and will only be supporting the rear of a soft top tub.
any thoughts,
and steve, even though you have a thorough way to answer a sometimes straight forward question i do mostly read through it to pick out your technical points (not necessarily your opinions) so any tech is apreciated

just out of curiosity how hard would it be to lengthen and widen a sierra body and put it on a hilux chassis (so it looks like the hummerzook in the first pic) even if it cant be rego'd it would be a cool promo vehicle
