how long does a lux/runner driveline last?
g'day all
i'm looking at buying a 317,000 km old 4runner it's got a new motor and turbo but with 317k on the clock how much longer will the diffs and gearbox last.
it's on 30"s and has done a bit of towing.
secondly i have done a bit of reading on the 3l motor and it sounds like you have to get the right one or life will be hell.

290 thousand on mine. im pretty sure its had a crap life. but gearbox is fine, engine is great. only injector pump has been replaced and waterpump/thermostat. CVs are rooted though, and it chews through centre bearings like they are cheap. new single piece shaft should fix this. depends on its history
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
My runner has 440,000km on the clock, apart from leaky diff seals and a noisy 2nd gear the running gear is awesome.
I've run into a few engine related problems with it (the 2L was reconditioned 60,000km ago) but most of that comes from the age of the peripheral parts (radiator, exhaust etc). I can't speak for the lux, but the first gen 4runner certainly lives up to the toyota tradition of going and going.
One thing though, while I havn't experienced this myself, apparently the IFS front diff in the '86 and onwards (The ones with the IFS) 4runner is rather easy to blow, especially if you go any larger than 31" tyres - I'm told a front locker would help ease/eliminate this problem however.
And the 85 and earlier models are prone to excessive sagging in the rear leaf springs - which can be solved rather easily.

340,000kms in a 2.8D lux, clutch @ 200,000kms, Rear diff @ 200,000kms and its noisy again, but thats from the crush sleave collapsing.
my 5th gear is finally getting a bit of a rumble tho.
Whole lot- Engine and gearbox is getting turfed early next year for a 1KZ-TE and R151 tho!

mine is kickin ass, 377 on the odo, 2nd engine but never a prob at all with box diffs and tailshafts.
its a 85 4rnnr with petrol so been reved high worked hard and traveld the country few times now. ive worn out wheel bearings ofcourse and just managed to crack the box oil filler plug which was seized for yrs and expected bad dark oil. but hey 120,000 ks and she was almost clear. mines bin raised so the front shaft needs a spacer to compensate the slapping loose extention, the rides bumpy as hell on hd shocks but hey shes bullet proof. puttin a v6 buick in soon sick of the poor fuel economy and slow drive. should be the perfect compromise fuel / weight /power.
ive tried hard to bend something expecting a shaft or cv to twist.but the best i could do was get a minimal bend in an axle, thats dropping the clutch and planting it in a bog. i do use the best oils and slick 50 treatments.***********
