Gutless 3B 3.4l

Post by jessie928 »

Gidday

i just bought another 84 42# and the 3b engine is gutless as.

our last 42 with the 3B ( burnt to a cinder in the last bushfires) pulled like a truck, engine had similar km's and condition. it didnt have extractors like the new one either ( although extractors loose some low down torque but not this much)

Could be as simple as an injector clean, or do these babies have a quick trick like the patrols with a clean of a hidden filter and they come back to life

Quicker to ask and find a solution than for me to rip everything out and replace it :)

mate id start with a engine service first
then do a tappet adjustment if no luck then go to pump and injectors

also check your exhaust system if its blocked too

Also is it blowing smoke ?

The injector pumps have a leather diaphragm and leak with age making them less efficient.

it still has the wire,

it does not blow a great amount of smoke, just a little

starts easy, glows like nuclear waste

they are not this gutless,we had previously one until it was burnt to the ground, it went twice as good as this one.

maybe i should just chuck the new 6.2 diesel in it. blaaah but i wanto keep at least 1 origional!

blows negligable smoke, its not blue, its not black, more like a very small amount of black, tint amount.

maybe i should wind up the fuel

no load, and load is the same amount of smoke, ( very very little)

do you know what kind of milage you get from a tank? I get about 450/500kms from a tank.. with normal driving..

The injector pump could of been set in an economical mode giving less power but better economy.. do you have access to a pyro at all?

i have only driven it 20km's since i bought it :)
i should wind the screw in a bit ( the one with the wire through it ) see what it does.
i have no pyro unfortunatly,

check the air intake too. Although if that was blocked or gunked up it would blow lots of smoke.

flip the exhaust manifold and set a turbo ..

It's a really nice engine .. it can be set to produce goot power .. keeping in mind it's a little engine ..

let it warm up properlly and go through a tank of fuel... it'll give you a better idea on how the injector pump is setup with what kinda kms you get. then you have more info to make better desicions when adjusting the fuel..

I have heard of 3b's getting 600km's to a tank EASY (85lt std tank on an 1984bj42) and this would be one setup for economy vs power. I have fiddled with mine to try and eliminate some black smoke under load, and also have a pyro. mine is still gutless (on 33's) and the EGT's very rarely reach 700c.. but mostly go up to 5-600c under heavy sustained load during high RPM.

it would be really good if you had a pyro to confirm that you are turning up the fuel well within the EGT limits otherwise you could break stuff.

if you want to fiddle with the screw.. you can wind it out 1/4 turn or less at t a time and check results.. i'd be very careful and only make minute adjustments initially to save potentially damaging anything.

hope this helps!

if your not sure where the fuel adjustement screw is..

Image

its the threaded part under teh edic control rod.. wind it out adds more fuel, wind it in to reduce the fuel..

remember.. baby steps!!! tiny changes..

thanks bloke,

i'll put a tank of diesel through it first and then try adjusting the screw.

run some injector cleaner past it too while you are running the tank down, try an air filter, fuel filter and oil filter

sometimes a little service can get them to wake up.
