I've been asked about part numbers for a brake caliper upgrade (46mm pistons instead of the stock 41.3mm ones).

All these brake numbers are from the Paddock Spares website, that's where I got my calipers from.
The ones with "ordered" are the ones I bought and fitted to my rangie. Fantastic upgrade that I recommend to all.
Needed modifications were only plumbing and some grinding to the mounting tabs.

They are front brakes only.

Can't find the caliper part numbers you bought on Paddock, can you please provide a link or cost?

What year RR do you have?

Am going to get their braided lines + 2" and some other bits, but want to do it all in one go.

My rangie is 85. I know they changed bolt sizes/thread somewhere along the line. But if you own a drill that's not a problem.

I had to grind the mounting ears on the calipers a little and I converted to vented front rotors at the same time.
I also put in a MC kit from paddock that has never worked properly. Looks like poor moulding of the rubber seals, the flash at the seams lets the pedal bypass part of the stroke (at random intervals).
I'm putting PBR seals back in.

Couple of Q's-

Looking at a Defender w/shop manual on the web shows only one hose each side going to the hub.

Looks like the split braking circuit is done differently from RRC's.

What plumbing changes did you make?

My RR has the Lockheed master cylinder with the seperate proportioning valve and I want to keep the primary and secondary circuits.

Also noticed that all the vented discs are the same, but pads are different from RRC.

Yes these brakes are single line, which I believe is a safer setup than dual circuit.
With the dual circuit setup, if you lose one corner (say rotor cracks, takes out the pistons in a front caliper) then you've lost both circuits.
With a single line to each corner, a major problem on one corner can only take out one brake circuit, the other will still work.
This is why almost no other vehicles use the twin hose setup.

The circuit closest to the firewall on your MC is plumbed to the front brakes, the circuit furtherest from the firewall gets plumbed through the proportioning valve to the rear brakes. You need to block off the extra port in the proportioning valve.

Pads are matched to calipers. You need to buy pads (and retention kit) which fit the new big front calipers.

Quick question for the original post. Are pads for these calipers widly available in aus. Not just standard pads but the high performance ones. Looking at Paddock Spares adn the orderd calipers are the def 90 caliper or does this only effect mounting and not the pad type. Plenty of talk about on which pads to use but would suck to have to bring them in from the UK each time.

Hi Guys,

I am really interested in converting my front brakes before i remake all my lines, could someone clarify the best way to do this? Getting rid of the dual circuit really appeals to me.

For example will a set of SI/II Disco calipers and rotors fit the Classic front housing, if late model stuff bolts straight on it would make servicing and spares easy in the future.

PS i don't know what brakes the discos run :oops: Are they single circuit? In regards to rotors, i an in two minds about vented/solid, any feedback would be appreciated.

Brakes are all interchangable between disco and classic rangies. Some discos are double line, some single but that's it.

I didn't have to remake any lines, I just made a plug for the spare port in the rear line pressure reducing valve, the rest fit with minor rebending in some places.

There was no reason for me to stick with solid rotors.

It's still kinda dual circuit with this mod. The primary works the fronts and the secondary works the rears through the proportioning valve.

That's how the Defender system appears to work according to the manual, with the warning light switch as part of the valve rather than part of the MC.

Thanks for checking the clearance dimensions KB. I have 365 mm ID rims so it's going to be close. There are a couple of 130's in town so I better have a really good look at them.

I intend using slotted solid DBA's in any case, cause I already have a new set lying around. Calipers will be STC 1262 & 3 if I get Def's.
