Flashing lights on a NH

Hi everyone,

Ive just picked myself up a NH Pajero to get started in 4x4 driving, although having a play around with the super select system, I dont believe it is working correctly.

When in 2wd mode, the back lights on the display panel are not lit. When I move the lever into any other mode (4H, 4HLc, 4LLc) the instrument lights light up, although they do not stay solid and constantly flash, sometime constantly, sometimes not.

The car looks as though it has not done much 4x4 use so its probably never been moved out of 2wd mode. All other examples Ive read on the net and these forums more indicate flashing lights when you are driving in 2wd mode or going from 4wd to 2wd.

Should I be looking at the same issues, like vacuum lines, solenoids, acutators etc? Or does this sound like a different issue?

What the hell is up with the topic title!!!

Anyway if the bottom two bulbs are not glowing at all then it's blown bulbs. Easy to replace.

I'd say look at the solinoids by the airbox. There is a really good link in the tech section above.

Ive changed the thread title... it was more of a joke since its a common problem, so Ive read.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but how can I be sure the 4wd system is engaging without relying on the lights? Also, do you know what type of bulbs the instrument panel uses?

I've had mine for about 18 minths now and found it can be a bit temporamental if it hasn't been in 4wd for a while. I'm pretty sure that in my case it's just a bit of crap in the switch on the transfer shifter, or dirty contacts, as I've found that if I give the transfer lever a bit of a wiggle around it'll come good. May not be the problem in yours, but it's quick and easy to try!

1) Drop the clutch on gravel......,
2) Jack up one back wheel slightly and try to drive off,
3) Turn tighly in a circle on a hard surface and it'll feel like the brake is on

Not sure on the bulbs but it is a 5 min job to check - 3 screws for the outer frame then I think 4 more behind that...
