Navara

Post by Toddles »

Got a mate who just bought a Nissan Navara. Is his first 4x4 so he isn't really that clued up on them yet and I am an 80 series owner so know bugger all about them. So chasing as much information as possible.

Pretty sure it is either a 2003 or 2004.
Not sure on km's
Is a Turbo Desiel and from memory is a manual.
Has the standard bullbar and a snorkel
Don't really know much about it yet.

So any common problems with these?
Anything to look out for?
What sort of turbo are they running? water/oil cooled?
Do they have diff breathers?

Is going to be used for camping, beach work, farm work, light off road and that is about it. Probably go through a river to wash out under it after going to the beach, river is about 60-70cm deep at the most.

Basically want to find out as many good/bad points about it so he knows what to expect, what to look out for and what he should do to it.

Cheers
Todd

Hey Todd,

Bit of a newbie myself... only 6mths in the land of fourbies!

Sounds like a d22 zd30 (3 lt TD) with 5spd.
115kw 304nm Goes great!
Similar to the patrol motor with different turbo.

My advice don't go too hard on the front diff in the they are different and are weaker then the v6 set up. I know from experience

If its got the factory alloy bullbar think its just a tjm. Good recovery points atleast.. And if you listen to my sales man... snatch over the towball mate...NOT!
Fair bit of gear around just not lockers for the diesel.
There are a few other d22 guys on here.. should be able to also help out.

Front diff breather is near the master cyl i think. rear of mine is just ontop of the diff. MAybe a g/box or transfer breather somewhere on the fire wall too. Not sure as mine is a 06 and could be different

No factory rear speakers but can be done.

check out http://www.nissan-navara.net/index.php
Plenty of info over there too

cheers

Two of the blokes in my office each own a diesel Navara ( latest ) and just did a trip to the top end and back.

No problems encountered by either.

Cheers guys.

I will pass on the information to him, the navara site should come in handy too.

He won't be doing any rough off road, so I don't think any of it's weaknesses will be coming into play.

I am yet to have a look at it, but they are a nice looking bit of kit...I'd still never part with my 80 series though :P

the first thing i would fit is a good catch can. that will stop a lot of t he oil geting into the intake.

also block the EGR and disable the EGR butterefly.

One thing I remember he told me after he returned,

one of the Navara's was taken to the dealer to have water removed from the diff due to the water crossings he encountered. You may want to get some advice on mods to limit that problem.

I've read plenty of horror stories about the 3lt TD in the Patrol... I'm wondering if you've heard/read/come across similar problems with this engine in the Navara?

the pre '03 ones had some failures. however around '03 they came out with a new block that i believe has better oilways. the navara doesn't suffer the same problems as the patrol as it lacks the variable turbo and maf sensors.
however if you service it badly any motor will die.
